I tend towards believing the accuser in these things just on the basis that the number of fake claims is vanishingly rare and the horrendous treatment the accuser tends to get makes them a) even rarer and b) in need of someone taking their side, but I'm aware it's hardly a foolproof method.

I don't have it to hand, but I have seen the research and the number of false claims was well under 1%. Not sure how they arrived at that figure given the difficulty in proving rape accusations one way or another, but I find it plausible. Accusing someone of rape, especially someone famous, is such an awful fucking business with such a small rate of success that I can see it dissuading liars. Not sure how I'll work it if our society ever stops treating rape victims like dogshit though.

The agenda was people potentially going to prison for crimes they didn’t commit (not the A-Team). The reason being the the police and CPS didn’t do their job. The headline case was a bloke (and I don’t 100% remember all the facts) who had put his life and degree on hold for 18 months/2 years whilst on a rape charge only for it to all fall to pieces when his barrister demanded all the evidence, and there were numerous text messages from the accuser telling her friends about the consequential sex she’s had with her supposed rapist. This led to a whole host of similar cases falling through for similar reasons. There was no saying it was widespread just that a miscarriage of justice was narrowly averted and may have occurred in the past. If it makes you feel at better, it was blamed on govt budget cuts, though not Brexit, weirdly.

Overall, in the CPS’ view, false allegations of rape are “serious but rare”. They estimate that there is one prosecution for a false rape claim out of every 161 rape cases prosecuted. That means — according to the best available data — false allegations make up 0.62 per cent of all rape cases.

The agenda that I was thinking of was certain sections of the media (mentioning no Daily Heils) whose reactions to Me Too was to denounce it as a hysterical attack on men.
