The headline you didn't expect to read this morning.

Haskell in stupid and ill-thought out self-publicity stunt? I wasn’t not expecting it.

The stunt was a bit dumb but it hardly created a "police frenzy" and anyone who thought it was a likely terrorist attack needs to give their head a wobble.
It was James pratting about. Nuff said.

"It came just a day after Home Secretary Priti Patel, 48, raised the UK terror threat level to “severe.”
Nice work there.
"James, an advocate of health and fitness explained: “I know they’ve got a job to do but gyms are one of the safest places to be at the minute.
“Everyone is sanitising their machines and taking it really seriously."
Thank you Doctor. But that is bullshit.

I'm hearing that from everywhere pretty much. Anyone who works in an industry is convinced that theirs is the safest industry and shouldn't be included in the lockdown.morepork wrote:"It came just a day after Home Secretary Priti Patel, 48, raised the UK terror threat level to “severe.”

Re: The headline you didn't expect to read this morning.
How often are they sanitising their gym equipment? After every use, after 15 minutes, after someone walks past and does that breathing thing? How are they sanitising machines, changing facilities, entrances/exits? How much does that actually cost and how will that be reflected in gym membership costs?
And even if the insides are gloriously safe it's still the case people need to travel to and fro' and that creates more possible transmissions. Perhaps gyms can be safely added to schools and unis staying open, but perhaps schools and unis staying open isn't safe already.
If we're going to worry about gym closures I'd rather start with looking at the likely closure of 20% of public swimming facilities in the UK well before worrying about private gyms.

What manner of salad would frequent public swimming facilities right now?

James might actually have been a better player if he hadn't turned himself into a muscle-bound gym monkey.

It's not about using them right now, it's about how many will never open again. And never open again in a country which has a worrying number of children who can't swim, and a worrying number of fat people. And I'm not saying something must be done, more if we're going to look at this I'd look at public facilities before worrying about private ones. I don't know why but I have some concern Agent Cummings and Boris might accidentally end up closing a lot of public facilities, be they community centres, swimming pools, libraries...

1. Gyms are easy to police in terms of the rules, someone refuses to abide by the Covid rules and you cancel their membership.Raggs wrote:I'm hearing that from everywhere pretty much. 2. Generally you aren't in a confined space with anybody else and social distancing is pretty easy. In fact it's beneficial to be further away from other people.
3. You provide lots of spray and blue roll, once you are finished, spray and wipe down. Cleaners go round and do a section every 30 minutes. Pretty easy.
I've not heard of any gyms having to close because of Covid outbreaks. Can't say the same for schools or universities that are still open. They are probably the big spreaders along with crowded office spaces and people pissed out their skull all clearing out the pubs at 10pm.

Gyms are also easy to close because they're simply not needed, and doing so reduces possible transmission between people at the gym, or people heading to and fro' the gym. Yes we'd all like to do what we'd like, but that's just tough, and some people need to grow up.

I'm afraid I don't know, but does every need to wear a mask whilst in the gym? If not, they strike me as singularly unsafe places. Indoors with lots of heavy breathing.

Gyms are a confined indoor space with lots of people exhaling and lots of surfaces that are touched repeatedly. There would be very little or no ventilation as we are now into late Autumn.
Doesnt strike me as a particularly safe environment to be in.
I wouldnt go in one right now.
Outside activity i could get behind, but if the overall intention is to limit people's movements and stop contacts, curtailing some leisure activities is the price we have to pay.

Outside activity is better, but even then, you're effectively creating more potential links that just aren't needed right now. Strip to the bare minimum of contacts and chances to pass it outside of your bubble as such.fivepointer wrote:Gyms are a confined indoor space with lots of people exhaling and lots of surfaces that are touched repeatedly. Can't speak for all but mine has high ceilings, air con (so lots of ventilation) and I don't think I went as close as 10ft to another person whilst I was in there. To be honest the supermarket shop makes me feel more under threat.Raggs wrote:FKAS wrote:1. Air con means bugger all unfortunately, unless it's using a fantastic filter system, which it won't be.FKAS wrote:Can't speak for all but mine has high ceilings, air con (so lots of ventilation) and I don't think I went as close as 10ft to another person whilst I was in there. Doesn't matter how close you are if the particles are floating around, and without masks there'll be aerosols and droplets, especially with exercise which expels much more.

Yep, it'd possibly be worse than attending choir practice for expelling droplets.

Air conditioning is a SAGE noted factor in helping mitigate Covid spread. Unless your mask is medical grade then the chance of it doing anything is far from certain.Raggs wrote:Air con means bugger all unfortunately, unless it's using a fantastic filter system, which it won't be.FKAS wrote:Can't speak for all but mine has high ceilings, air con (so lots of ventilation) and I don't think I went as close as 10ft to another person whilst I was in there. Ideally you'd exercise outside on your own but given the weather and the fact it's dark by 5pm that's got other risks. Having been cleaned out by cars whilst on my bike before now riding in the dark is not the safest even with hi-viz and lights.
The big argument for keeping them open is the mental health benefits for the people that go, if you're struggling the cold and the dark isn't going to an attractive option like a gym might be.

So do some star jumps, yoga, weights and whatnot in your house, and get out for a run in the daytime on days off.

Medical grade masks help you not catch it. Pretty much any face covering will help you not spread it.
Most air con recycles air, though i did forget that it also takes water out so will help, even then it's not the same as a proper filtration system.
