Super6

Post by General Zod »

Thought I’d start a thread for the Super6 competition.

As an exile, I can’t see myself making many games, but I’m keen to see how it goes and will be watching on other platforms which are hopefully not as shoddy as the current domestic highlights packages available on the SRU website.

The arguments are over for now and it’s happening, so hopefully this thread will help chart it’s progress (or otherwise) into an additional pathway to the pro game (or even the a third pro club team). Or even a full time professional club league in Scotland - hey, if you don’t dream big, it’s less likely to happen!

For what it’s worth, I feel that the anticipation has been tempered somewhat by the SRU already showing a lack of joined-up thinking and scheduling the opening game at the same time and in the same city as the Edinburgh Pro14 match. Notwithstanding that it means some fans will miss the first opportunity of forming a habit of getting down to Meggetland, what’s left of rugby media in Scotland will presumably just go to Murrayfield instead, meaning the launch doesn’t generate as much coverage as it otherwise would.

Anyway, I reckon Southern Knights for the title, partly because it’s an excuse to play this...

Interesting to see Finn's younger brother Archie will be playing for Boroughmuir. I saw him play for Ayr years ago - nothing like his brother (in a good way). I wonder if he could ever be the cheese to Finn's chalk but it's getting a bit late for him to break through to the pro ranks. Then again the guy has a Masters from Cambridge so not the end of the world.

I'll try and watch the games when they're on TV/ online but also an exile so won't make it to any of the games.

Nice to see former London Scot, Lee Millar, captaining Watsonians. Top guy and I hope he does well.

The opening match sounded like a good one. Encouraging stuff.

Was at a colts' game so missed it, but looks like it'll be on iplayer later. Was it a good game?

I couldn’t catch it all - only watched intermittently until it went 3-7 Heriots. The parts I saw were fairly attritional, but I found it entertaining nevertheless. The ref made me laugh when they were having a few re-set scrubs and he told the front rows that the spectators hadn’t come to watch them scrummage, or something like that.

The tv production was quite good - the commentator knew the players and I think Chris Paterson was the “expert” turn. Looked a decent crowd, too.

Sounds promising. I'll be watching the highlights when I get home this evening.

What a meltdown from Stirling. I switched off around 58 mins as I had to head out. Winning 22-5... somehow lost the game 34-22.

Even prior to that Watsonians were running really good support lines with real pace & power so not THAT surprising.

I did the same as you.

The crowd didn't look too bad but the timing of the season looks brainless. November to end of feb. Can you think of any worse months to play rugby or go watch as a spectator? Is the idea to have them available for the run-in with their prem teams? Otherwise running it Feb-May would have made much more sense and got a lot more bodies out.

Time to resurrect another old thread. Anyone watching tonight on bbc iplayer?

Coverage keeps cutting out with a message saying “sorry for the swearing in this transmission”!

Must be the Myreside YT.

Decent game so far. Well, decent second half - first half broadcast was kaput until Badenhorst’s try.

Thought Watsonians’ 8 was good but they’ve all faded somewhat as Heriots have become more coherent. Think watsonians’ scrum has been a bit lucky - they’re all over the place in their binding.

As a neutral, while I am enjoying the game, I’m finding it hard to pick a side. I’m not against private schools, but I just can’t really empathise with either team.

Edit - ref has been decent too.

Ok, I enjoyed that and would tune in again (next time the missus is away). Very unlikely I would have tuned in to one of the old, pre-S6 league matches, so maybe they’re on to something.

Please tell me the Southern Knights run out to Glenn Campbell tho.

Thanks for posting that video. Will try and watch more of it later. From some of the chat from coaches and the other coverage I've seen, the S6 is beginning to show it's worth this year.

Well, from what I saw today, Bulls deserved their victory. Ayr loosehead was excellent in the last ten. Was quite funny how out of breath he was after the run in for the try, but he’d been up and around beforehand, I suppose. Shocker of a tackle just before the end got a deserved red, but looks like a good tournament so far. Will be interested in the cross-border games if they take place.

Big developments - https://www.theoffsideline.com/london-s ... 23-season/

I've always been sceptical of giving money to London Scottish, but this seems a sensible approach. It will also be good fun for the players.

I reckon they use the super 6 for a few years and London Scottish becomes the third pro team that we need.

Logistically I want to know how that sits with the URC but possibly they think the saffas/welsh/another can increase or decrease team by 1

To be honest any non EU country could set up a team in Spain and fill the other number

TBH I think the Saffas coming into the league killed off any chance of a 3rd pro team. It was already viewed as not even on the horizon.
The URC is already a mess of so called pools and uneven fixture lists; adding another team makes it worse. The current set up delivered one thing everyone felt necessary - fewer games for players. I can't see more games being a way forward, so it would mean an even more uneven non-sensical set of fixtures.
The Welsh are not going to field another team, more likely if anything to fold one (which would create a space I concede).
I would add that one factor in the mess that was/is super rugby was the constantly changing set up and conferences which no-one really understood or liked

sounds like a big deal for London Scottish. May need to split the club, and disappointing to see they think the level of S6 is equivalent to something down the Eng national leagues if I've read all the stuff properly. If S6 is that standard, we can scrap it. But it isn't

I'm still sceptical about finding LS. For S6 the need to be at least 75% SQ (and I'd hope that requirement increases for all S6 teams sooner rather than later). Yet the RFU still want assurances about being community based. Tough ask to do both well

Starting up again soon. Original cross border idea not an option at the moment so effectively playing two rounds a year (one in spring and one in autumn). Just under 20 games per team.

There’s a comp being proposed from September-ish which involves teams from SA (Cheetahs), Scotland (?), Italy, Georgia, Romania, Spain (x2), Russia, joint team from Kenya/Zim.

I don’t know if this is the thread or not for this. Am just wondering who the Scottish team would be. A composite S6/8 team, or maybe even a Development team full of mostly U20s and some seasoned pros? Am just thinking they’ll have to be at least semi-pro if they’re playing the Cheetahs.
