SCOTLAND RUN IN SIX TRIES OVER SPAIN!
An impressive performance from Scotland Women in Almeria yesterday saw them score six tries in a convincing 36-12 win against Spain. The warm-up Test against a Spain team ranked two places above them was the perfect preparation ahead of the Women’s Six Nations Championship which kicks off next month. Scotland Head Coach Philip Doyle was delighted with the win, he said: “I am so, so happy with the team and the way they performed. They had to dig themselves out of some holes at certain stages in that match but there are so many positives to take out of the match. We had two first cappers score on their first matches and credit to the forwards pack for turning over scrum twice. The backs had a field day, Hannah out in the centre was a serious threat in the game.”

It's a great start to an important year for Scotland Women as they seek to improve their world rankings and qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. All rugby supporters are encouraged to welcome the team back home to Scotstoun for their home Six Nations games against England (Sunday 9 February, kick-off 12.10pm) and France (Saturday 7 March, kick-off 7.45pm). As well as exciting rugby and giving the team some much-deserved support, you can also expect face-painting, great food & drink and the opportunity to meet the team post-match. Tickets are available now, including the “Kids for £1” offer (with a paying adult).

Saw the result, which was a good one given the world rankings. I find it difficult to gauge progress at that level at the moment due to what appears to be to be inconsistency in the depth of talent available for a given fixture (both us and the opposition), but building on winning twice in South Africa, it bodes well. I enjoy watching it, not least because it’s not as kick-dominated and you get some “tap and go” fun.

Looking at the highlights, it's amazing how much the standard has improved over the last few years. Worldwide but particularly in Scotland. Long may it continue

Very sad news tonight that Siobhan Cattigan a member of the Womens national side had passed away. No more been said, but the SRU have said that there are specialist employees providing ongoing support which suggests it may be sudden and a shock.

She had played as recently as the Spain win. Very sad, 26 is no age at all.

Very sad indeed. Is it clear what happened at all? I tried looking up what happened and suddenly got a load of (unsubstantiated from what I can tell) anti-vaxxer talk about her taking the vaccine?

I don’t mean to focus on that though, any cause at all at age 26 is pretty tragic.

I will wait and see. But will say when you are concussed (personal experience decades ago) you !hear! and think all sorts. But when a player has takena head knock there is no excuse for keeping the player on; when the ref has to order the payer off, the officials and failed, badly, n excuse for that

As others have said, saw he headline feared for what's in the story.

That's difficult to read. Shameful. If there's even a jot of truth in that story, people need to be sacked.

I've struggled with watching elite rugby for a while as I've struggled to see how the authorities take player safety seriously. This just pushes me, and speaking to others around me I know they feel the same, just pushes us away from the game.

I worry about those who played for 10+ years of senior rugby too. Bound to be lots of cases similar to those the pros have.

Well that was a horrible and disturbing read. I get why the SRU press team are studiously avoiding saying anything but it doesn't inspire confidence in any way and begs all sorts of questions about the future of the sport.

Great to see David Walsh still breaking stories. Will be interested to see if he's got other angles lined up, like when he was the cycling correspondent.

I can’t add much that hasn’t been said. That was horrible to read. I thought the SRU statement at the end was pretty pathetic. It’s all well and good saying you offer this and that, but doesn’t really address whether anyone followed through on it.

I hope it’s not as bad as it all appears in that article, because that is so awful on a number of levels.

Really unlucky first round loss to Wales in the World Cup. Pulled it back to 15-15 (three tries to two) with about a minute to play then Wales did superbly to go through about twenty five phases, slowly making progress, til they caught Scotland offside and then slotted the penalty.

Another gutting loss - 14-12. Their defence is great. Well organised, great fitness and real desperation. Just don't have quite enough in attack outside the maul.
