10 team premiership - under discussion

Post by jimKRFC »

According to the BBC:

Not sure how they'd decide who goes down, unless Quins & Irish are so bad financially that they merge!

Also reported that some teams (I suspect Bath & Bristol) still want to raise the cap next season to £6.4M.

Yep, this is the fun part from the article
"Everyone is like 'yeah, we agree that 10 is the way to go, as long as it's not me'.

"How that will work when we are sitting at 11 teams, I don't know?
In the absence of anyone else going bust, everyone will be desperate not to be that 11th team

Its an easy solution. Move Leicester down and league and re-brand them as Northampton North. No worries.

Or just relegate Bristol and move them to Coventry. I don't think there's enough teams there yet.

That could work literally and metaphorically.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but Gary Graham was on the rugbypod this week suggesting the rumours among the players at least was moving to two leagues of 10 teams. Again all rumour, but potential split around willingness to spend money initially (although I would assume promotion/relegation between divisions).

It would seem to be the obvious solution. Have a viable second tier and then it's not a case of consigning one club (or three, assuming Wasps and Wuss can actually be resuscitated) to oblivion. Will depend on our new cricketing marketing guy being able to sell investing in it to rich people though.
