That’s bloody awful. The Independent covered it, but not seen anything on what happened next.

I did read that one court had ordered the return of the Californian national guard to governor control, but that a federal court had quickly reversed that.

Yep, Trump keeps control of the national guard for now. Not sure where this leads . . . presumably to the Supreme Court, eventually, who will confirm the President's power to do whatever he likes?

I’ve just read the NYT report on the court appeal which is a bit clearer.

The first federal court agreed with the governor and required command of the national guard to be returned to state control. Trump administration immediately appealed and the first decision was postponed pending the appeal being heard.

It’s looking like LAPD have got the situation well in hand so I’d expect trump to stand down the national guard and claim victory before he potentially loses another court case.

Florida sheriff warns anti-ICE protesters ‘we will kill you’ if you so much as ‘throw a brick’
“If you try to mob rule a car in Brevard County, gathering around it, refusing to let the driver leave in our county, you’re most likely going to get run over and dragged across the street,” the Republican sheriff said during the immigration news conference.

“If you spit on us, you’re going to the hospital, then jail. If you hit one of us, you’re going to the hospital, jail, and most likely get bitten by one of our big, beautiful dogs we have here,” Ivey warned.

Police state. But also, reading the comments, a really violent country . . . too many people who see their opponents as objects to be crushed. Too much aggression, not enough empathy.

Modern politics. We get the same over here but with less obvious violence. Tory scum for example. The days of consensus politics are largely dead.

But violence is the point of difference. Therefore it's not the same here. (Yet?)

No its not the same... yet. But we are headed in the same direction, for the same reasons: an inability to accept alternative points of view; an emotional immaturity that thinks disagreement means hatred.

And now, as WT has just posted, political assassinations are being carried out in the US, which we've seen here over the past number of years too. We're going in the wrong direction and no one - public or politician - seems willing to change course.
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Agreed, a reflection of American culture and the mass ownership of firearms. Although with two MPs murdered in the past decade, we’re not in a position to get too complacent. There’s enough idiots on this country, n both sides of the spectrum. Thankfully it’s much harder to get a firearm.

He's such a cretin. I almost preferred Johnson, at least you knew he was a vile bastard long before he gained any sort of power

Trump enriches himself (his no. 1 goal) and exposes the US economy (and the world's) to deregulated crypto.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... corruption

Trump will die rich but when crypto goes down it'll be like 2008 all over again.

Netanyahu apparently wanted to go for direct regime change, but the Americans instructed him not to. Perhaps they were thinking of going ahead anyway, but I doubt the Iranian leadership is staying still long enough to be targeted via air strike.

Trump has a habit of talking bollocks and since he is increasingly losing whatever marbles he had in the first place, he may be confused.

Looking at the latest news it’s quite possible that the US will launch a strike of their own.

God help us all, Trump's being emboldened by Netanyahu. He likes the idea of bombing a country that can't hit back. Maybe he also wants to 'set an example' by devastating a place than no one (who matters) cares about. Greenland next?

A rules-based world order was a nice idea.

Interestingly, it looked old like some of the MAGA crowd aren’t happy. Not because of international law or anything like that, just that they don’t want to get involved in foreign wars.

This might peel support away from Trump. It’s a fair while until the mid term elections, so Trump might not consider that a problem at this time, but equally he might decide it’s not worth the effort.

Trumps sole lodestone is being adored and praised, so it's actually a fairly solid check on his warmongering. Can't imagine he's especially concerned about any election that doesn't involve him.

The midterms will be important for him, although if he Dems do well then he can blame them for his future lack of any achievement.
