Disturbing news
There's this guy I've known for probably a bit over 10 years. He's not a friend as such but someone I am (was?) friendly with. I knew him well enough to stop and have a chat if I saw him in the street sort of thing. We had common interests so I would usually see him randomly at various social events and so on. I helped him out with a bit of writing when he was setting up a media business, that sort of thing. He has (had?) a bit of a public profile amongst a certain crowd.*
Anyway, I've just found out that earlier this years this bloke was the subject of some fairly credible looking investigative journalism arising out of social media allegtions about his conduct towards considerably younger women and girls (like early/mid-teens when he was mid/late 30s) that he met online and at the some sort of events I used to see him at. The allegations range from inappropriate creepiness through to possible illegality. There seems to have been a police investigation started but I don't know where that got to.
I don't remember ever hearing him say or seeing him do anything that gave any indication of anything wrong. To be honenst, I'm a bit stunned by it all. He seemed like a nice enough bloke, a bit odd in ways but who isn't?
Has anyone else found out that someone they know is not quite the kind of person they thought? It makes you wonder who else you know might have some disturbing secrets.
*Yes, I'm being deliberately vague to avoid identifying him.

There was a barrister who I knew vaguely who got convicted of possession of child pornography, including taking surreptitious upskirt video of young girls. It's extremely unsettling.Lizard wrote:There's this guy I've known for probably a bit over 10 years. He's not a friend as such but someone I am (was?) friendly with. I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Used to have a pint with a guy who was a real good looking ladies man . Bit of an action man . deepsea diving etc , took someones' yatch to Jamaica to collect the millionaire owner and return him to the UK . Had a range of beautiful women and always had top range cars . Bumped into him a few years later when he told me he was having a bit of trouble with the local plod over mistaken identity . Sometime later he received an 8 year sentence for dealing in class A drugs and , according to the press was on the fringes of an international drug ring .
He's still about but a shadow of his former self .
Not what you could call a close friend , but , as been said, somewhat disturbing .

a friend of my dads, a quiet, unassuming bloke, loved his rugby and a pint/cigar, was done for attempted murder of his wife, he just snapped, my dad, to his credit was one of the few friends who didn't disown him and visited him in prison (remand?) He was a shadow of himself afterwards. I wouldn't say I found it disturbing, only that I found it hard to believe of him, cos he was such a nice guy

Re: Disturbing news
Used to know a guy who was jailed for killing his wife. When I first heard it on the news I turned to a barrister colleague and said some partner at "X" LLP has been arrested for killing his wife. He said jokily "it's not 'y' is it? He's always on about killing his wife". "Umm, yeah, it is" I said.
Guy I was at school with was jailed for pics of minors only a couple of weeks ago as well.

Woolworths.. Havent heard that name in years.
It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance.

I have not seen one here... Woolworths had a cafeteria back in the day.. And an ice cream counter. I remember getting the huge green jello with whipped cream every time I went. Man times have changed.Discreet Hooker wrote:Coco wrote:SerjeantWildgoose wrote:When I was 3, I pinched a handful of pick 'n mix from Woolworths.

Re: Disturbing news
That reminds me of a post from the old Mike Reid poster.....(runaround, NOW).....he posted in a rugby club stereotypes thread about his mate 'Animal'.onlynameleft wrote:Used to know a guy who was jailed for killing his wife. All clubs used to have an 'Animal',......at my club he had a different name but it's the same generic character.
Mike's last sentence in his post was:
'One day you get a phone call from an old club mate and his opening line is:
'You'll never guess who's been sent down'
'Animal..?'
'Yeah,...how'd you know that..?'
