Re: The Glasgow Carpet Burns and Cary Grant Appreciation Thread
There will be a time and place for proper discussion on this one but do Glasgow need to do the business next week or win the pro 12 to avoid Townsends Glasgow of being accused of under achieving? It feels like they are always capable of more.
Since taking over from Lineen he's clearly improved the team that came 4th in 11/12 pro 12, finishing 1st and winning the whole thing once and no worse than 3rd in the last 4 years. But they have only won 3 play off matches in those years iirc and never progressed in Europe.
This European campaign feels very Scottish. Promising lots but either fluffing it or scraping by.

To be fair, Glasgow looked really good this season until they played Munster who themselves are very impressive. If Glasgow win in a decent manner this weekend, we can't really talk about scrapping by.Big D wrote:There will be a time and place for proper discussion on this one but do Glasgow need to do the business next week or win the pro 12 to avoid Townsends Glasgow of being accused of under achieving? Munster, Leinster and Clermont seem to be miles ahead of the rest. I have not watched Saracens play, feel free to add them to the list.

In terms of scraping by I don't mean the performance I mean scraping through as a best 2nd place, although reading back I see they only need a win.Adder wrote:To be fair, Glasgow looked really good this season until they played Munster who themselves are very impressive. I see what you mean, I just thought I would point out that Munster is on some beastly form atm. Glasgow can still mess it all up by losing this weekend and stick to Scottish tradition..Big D wrote:In terms of scraping by I don't mean the performance I mean scraping through as a best 2nd place, although reading back I see they only need a win.Adder wrote:To be fair, Glasgow looked really good this season until they played Munster who themselves are very impressive. They are, and the 1st game they were very good. Last night was a game Glasgow got into a position to win, and failed. That feels very Scottish.Adder wrote:I see what you mean, I just thought I would point out that Munster is on some beastly form atm. It just got me thinking whether overall, for all the good they have done (and they have) this Glasgow team should have more to show than 1 very good Pro12 win and 3 play off match wins.
Maybe the shouldn't, but my mind tends to wander when bored.

It's an interesting question and I think yes. Toonie has done well and although they've not gone backwards they've not really kicked on from the championship year. It's part of the reason I'm not 100% enthusiastic about him taking over Scotland.Big D wrote:There will be a time and place for proper discussion on this one but do Glasgow need to do the business next week or win the pro 12 to avoid Townsends Glasgow of being accused of under achieving? If we ignore the European cup, Glasgow has been very consistent in the last few years, they are a team being talked about and respected by the opposition and the Press. No one expects an easy win against them. Last season they were very unlucky to lose F Russel in the opening minutes, who knows what would have happened if that hadn't happened , but they only lost narrowly.Big D wrote:They are, and the 1st game they were very good. I don't think Glasgow has ever been this dominant in the European cup and that is a huge step up. A 1/4 final would be a great result on which they can build. They are playing the "best teams "in Europe after all.
I think the Irish are going to be amazing this 6 nations.

What Glasgow and Edinburgh need, is more experienced(and good) playmakers. This is probably why Vern Cotter Picks Laidlaw on the National side.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not that we want to rely on it but that table suggests to me that Glasgow could still go through if they lose and Montpol and Exeter both win - as long as Weeg get a LBP and the others don't get a TBP. Points difference would take them through.
Now that would be scraping home...

I think if you are gonna be judging townsend you have to look at more than just trophies (even though I think they are impressive). The way the play has been transformed and the number of players who've really improved has been the key.

Fair point. And amongst all that a trophy has been won and at least an ERC quarter beckons. Fuck thinking otherwise. Job to do at Leicester - let's do it.Cameo wrote:I think if you are gonna be judging townsend you have to look at more than just trophies (even though I think they are impressive). Can't see Exeter getting a bp win at clermont.
Danger is Montpellier getting a bp win but Glasgow should qualify with a losing bp
To be honest Leinster are probably the easiest away QF. No easy one but they have probably the easiest Of an extremely hard set.

For me only reason Glasgow never won last year was Bennett fucking up the 4th try against Cardiff. If they had got that point they would have a QF and I don't think they would have lost at MF in the final.
Think toonies magic wand has struggled and Glasgow have really missed matawala and leone.

As Greg said , Leicester are a different beast at home but 2 weeks before 6N and nothing to play for except pride I can't see a full strength team out, would be a stupid pride move when they need to focus on their league campaign,
But Glasgow have a habit of cocking things up in this tournament

Re: The Glasgow Carpet Burns and Cary Grant Appreciation Thread
I happen to think you'll do more, but a losing BP should see you through, in my view.
I think that Munster will do better at home against Racing than Saracens will do against a still-battling Toulon. I think Sarries will win it, but not with a BP. That will put Toulon out and leave the top 4 in the order Leinster (win but no BP - but their points diff is astonishing), ASM (Who will clobber Exeter at the Michelin), Munster, Saracens.
After that I'd say Wasps will bag all 5 points in Zebre ending up on 22 and going to Watford. Connacht might manage a losing BP, but I can't see them beating Toulouse - either way, one of them is likely to be coming to Thomond Park and the other is done.
Get a win at Welford Road and you get a sunny spring day out in the Auvergne; add a BP and you could trump Connacht/Toulouse for a piss wet afternoon in Limerick. I don't think either of these scenarios is beyond you.
It doesn't matter who manages to get the last QF spot as they'll get crucified by Leinster at the Aviva.
My betting, depending on the SF draw, is that Leinster are going to take too much beating this year.

It's not possible to pull someone's feet from under them in that position. This is Josh Strauss, not the Mountain from Game of Thrones.Eugene Wrayburn wrote:Except obviously for the fact that his leg was being pulled from under him.hugh_woatmeigh wrote:Chatting back? Yes. Murray was superb the other night but he milked it. Like he often does.
Anyway.. some relevant news. There was some truth behind that Weeg story it seems.

To be honest Hastings is in a difficult spot over this decision.
Seems to like it in Bath, but Priestland resigned and fuck knows what's happening with Ford/replacement. He's started to get games in the 1s.
Or does he got to Glasgow where he'd probably be 3rd choice but get a little more gametime?

That is interesting. Wouldnt harm him to be there another year but will want gametime. At Glasgow would hope to be second choice soon enough. Hope it doesn't suggest Russel is off but think they would be interested either way.Big D wrote:To be honest Hastings is in a difficult spot over this decision.

Wonder if Edinburgh are interested though not sure they need a young flashy ten just now plus they could always give Kinghorn a chance

I suggest you watch it again. Strauss quite clearly pulled himover by his leg with his grip on the inside leg helped by him rolling out. But sure you crack on since facts have never been something you worried much about.hugh_woatmeigh wrote:It's not possible to pull someone's feet from under them in that position. Looking at the fixtures, I think that by the time they play Glasgow will know what they need to do. Obviously itd be nice to get through any which way but I really hope they do it with at least a win
