Pity there's nobody around like Mike Brearley, no where near the best opening batsmen but as
a captain 1st class. 31 tests as captain won 17 drew 10 lost 4

The person it should go to is the one who seems to demonstrate the best understanding of field placings allied to some leadership potential, with the rather important caveat they should be good enough to make the side. And really it's an easier job for a batsman than bowler or wicketkeeper.

Can Dylan Hartley play cricket? Not that you'd want to voluntarily give him a weapon on the field of play. Two birds with one stone.

Nobody likes to hear a Kiwi going on about hitting their balls for six in cricket

21 extras bowled by England with India needing 6 runs from the final ball!!!

A dot ball seals the win for England by 5 runs to avoid a whitewash in the series.
Exciting match but those extras nearly came back to haunt us.

Its been a good series actually, better than the tests. England played some good attacking cricket, are hindered by being very weak in the spin bowling department, and came up a little short even with some high scores away to an excellent one day side who were at home.

yes its been very good. Nice to get a win in the final game. as well as a spin bowling deficit, we do have the habit of making attractive 50's but failing to go on and make a really big score.
That said, 3 scores over 300 with 2 over 350 is something to be pleased about.
Who would be a bowler in these ODI's though?

With Cook stepping down and Root likely to step up, will we see any personnel differences for England?
I imagine Cook will keep his place, while Root, Bairstow, Stokes will form the backbone. But what else?
Rashid in the team? Mo Ali still there, but as a batting allrounder? Woakes or a more offensive bowler? And who to open? Hameed or Jennings? Will Finn return?
Cook
Hameed
Jennings
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Ali
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Finn/Wood
BTW, Mo Ali's batting average for 2016 was almost 47. That's not bad, and perhaps is a sign that he's starting to find his place.

Woakes would be a head of Finn I think.
I wouldn't be surprised to see any one of Buttler, Woakes/Wood, or even the spinner that needed to fix his action (I can't recall his name) ahead of Rashid.

It wouldn't be a England cricket series without one.

I guess it's up to the bowlers to save England then?

It would take some doing for England to lose this considering how things were looking before play started today!

Sky Sports predictor had England winning on day 4 by about 200 runs. It made the prediction on day three when England had either all wickets in hand or just one loss.
A lot has happened since then, but it's looking like a decent prediction.

Looks like England are for a potential humping in the 2nd test unless the top 5 do a Boycott.
So does Ballance keep getting the 3 slot...hopefully he will prove me wrong on Monday. ..but he really has not shown the confidence in his skill on the big stage for a while.so who else is able to step in.
I also have not seen anything that makes me think Dawson is the real thing he was selected as a spinner who would not leak runs .I appreciate we need to develop a spinner for India tours but is this at the expense of being in the game at home.
I like Rashid he may give a few runs but he does look as if he will take a wicket. We often like to use spinners to lock up an end rather than anormal attacking force.

Well Moeen got another 4...so that's 14 so far at 15.07, with a strike rate of 25.29...
Those are pretty impressive. Especially if he can keep them up and improve his all time figures.

No disagreement about Moen... he is normally effective in UK ...it's if another spinner is selected should it be Dawson?
