Really? Just going on personal observation, and I don't watch Western TV or films usually. But I live in the middle of a big expat scene (apparently numbering in the tens of thousands in my neck of the woods), and it seems to be mostly a North American thing - and most often involving skinny guys in their early twenties . Though come to think of it, quite a few of the Super Rugby players do seem to be running around with hairy faces these days...

Almost forgot - hoodies as a fashion statement. I wear one myself when its the middle of winter, but not because I want to look like a gangsta rapper in the spring . . .

What dictionary are you using to get that? it's perfectly possible to be unstable but not at the point of crisis; equally it's perfectly possible to be stable and at the point of crisis. Let's face it, many, many things are supposed to be unstable.

Shirley someone can be in a critical condition, that is that their injuries or illness have the potential to threaten their life, but be in a state that is not currently deteriorating; that is to say, 'stable'.

If its all about stability being equal to not getting worse, then the condition of someone who is dead could be described as stable.

The key phrase is "at a point of crisis", ie a point where the state change can occur. To use the word "stable" in this context just means that they are not dead yet.

I'm pretty sure that medical profession only use this phraseology to put a positive spin on it. Adding the word "stable" makes a bad situation sound so much better.
