There has been a massive increase in shoplifting from 2 local supermarkets due to reduced security presence and
reduced willingness of police to take follow-up action..it is annoying to staff and shoppers who pay their way, often having to budget their funds.

Many shoplifters are honest citizens suffering from depression. It's like blaming people for alcohol addiction, binge eating or watching British club rugby. These people are trying to find solace in something which provides them with temporary relief from their wretched existences. It's called maladaptive behavior. They need our help and support, not our loathing...

In some cases yes, and when professionals get to the root cause, support is available.
The ones I am referring to are mostly opportunistic scally-wags on the take...there are millions with equally wretched lives who choose to stay on the right side.

Not if its a impulse control disorder, like kleptomania. That's more of a cry for help. Often these people have turn out to be wealthy, and it's particularly common among women. Adolescents indulging in this type of behavior are invariably found to be suffering some emotional trauma as well.

This is the main reason for the upsurge...and there are many who pay multiple visits to the same store daily.
When stock loss is high enough to justify it, retailers bring security back..for a while, then it's back to square one.
