Wasps no longer considering temporary Sixways move as they pursue new stadium

Wasps have confirmed they will not use the former Sixways Stadium of Worcester Warriors as an interim home when the club is cleared to return to rugby.

The six-time Premiership champions were based in Coventry when they went into administration in October 2022.

Club legend Kenny Logan was hopeful they would initially choose Sixways, prior to relocating to Kent.

But a Wasps spokesperson said they will use a temporary base in the "Greater London and South East England Area".

The spokesperson added: "Wasps have never considered Sixways as a permanent home and were involved only to facilitate an option to play at the stadium on a temporary basis.

"Our intended permanent home is now in Kent, where we are actively pursuing our new stadium."

Why use the readymade stadium and adapt the name of the club to Worcester Wasps, try to unite the two (one and a half) fan bases when you can try and set up everything from scratch in Kent where the locals don't want you. It's not like the training ground is a short trip to Sixways or anything. Mind you given the mess over the liquidations who knows who owns the training ground and Sixways now.

I am in favour - Wasps is historically a London club and the south-east beyond London is starved for professional sport. If they can find a decent set-up in that area, where they're not actively hated, they should - there's enough of their historic fans in the capital to make a decent supporter base and they've got little to no competition from other sports.

What they are not, and should never have been, is a Midlands side. Both sides of that merger would hate it.

Couldn't agree more Puja. As a lifelong Wasps fan I concur. I'm from Sussex - the South East is crying out for a premiership rugby club - they'd fill it regularly, especially in a posh, rugby-ish area like Sevenoaks. I remember hoping when they moved to Coventry that they'd sweet talk their way into the Amex and share with Brighton... But a Saracens style stadium in Sevenoaks would be the making of them. Good rugby schools around too, lot's of clubs - they'd fill it regularly.

Ah I hadn't read that - you're right, they won't fill a 28k seater stadium every week, absolutely not. I didn't realise the scale of it. What's Allianz Park? 10k? I can see that. 28k is like the Amex - no chance.

Wasps averaged just under 10k in their last season in the Prem so if they are confident of getting more fans back down south I can see wanting some more seats but 28k is pretty massive for a rugby ground in the UK. Build to 15k with the potential to increase again is probably a wiser and cheaper plan.

Did they really? I wouldn't have guessed that. Mind you, there was a period in which they were giving away tickets for a quid or something so you never know. Agreed on the 15k.

However, it seems a shame the west midlands no longer have a pro club. Bit odd that there isn't a Brummie team at the top. A lot of rugby clubs round that way.

I used to dream of making a fortune and turning Lewes RFC or somewhere in Sussex into the next Saracens... Not happening unfortunately!

How funny. Did you ever run out on the blue?

Living in Sweden, I miss Lewes something terrible. People ask me if I miss England but I usually say I actually miss Lewes/Sussex. It rather limits the job options when I periodically look at returning... I don't think I'd turn Lewes into Sarries but I'd definitely fix the boiler in the changing rooms. That'd be miracle enough.

It is very odd there is no big rugby clubs in that area. You would have thought they would make up a large section of the twickenham crowd.
