Kaepernick is a very courageous young man.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

History.....is an interesting feature of humanity. 20,000 years ago and we can still identify the individual twats that we blindly followed.
And yet we still allow them to repeat their nefarious tricks. THAT is strange.

Just curious, but who do we remember from 20,000 years ago, exactly?kk67 wrote:History.....is an interesting feature of humanity. 20,000 years ago and we can still identify the individual twats that we blindly followed.

My apologies. How far back were the Egyptians and the Mayans..?. My history is very poor.

The Mayans were knocking about around 4000 years ago. Last time I looked the Egyptians were still there, but their ancient civilisation lasted from about 3000BC until, if the Old Testament is anything to go by, they fell foul of locusts, pestilences, the deaths of the first-born males and the fickle tides of the Red Sea around about 300 years before Mary and Joe went knocking the doors of Bethlehem's B&B quarter.

I admit that you have finally stretched my patience to breaking point. I shan't share with the board the earliest PM that you sent to me, but enough to say I have joined the ranks of those who you then castigated for, as far as I can see, simply reaching the point where they have grown tired of your ubiquitous blether.rowan wrote:You've been showing your true colours lately, haven't you, mate.

You are easily the most pretentious, pompous and superior-minded contributor to this forum. That kind of approach doesn't win respect where I'm from. Quite the reverse, in fact.

Yes, I can see why you might be disappointed to discover that your first impressions that I, "seem to be quite a reasonable guy" (Quite the ringing endorsement!) proved so disastrously unfounded. It cannot be easy, either, to find that the answer to your question is that it is increasingly probable that "it is you"!rowan wrote:You are easily the most pretentious, pompous and superior-minded contributor to this forum. In over a decade of posting on this site and its antecedents, I have only ever come upon two other posters who have got me to the point of such a response - and in their defence, at least they were entertaining. Both UG and hwntw were able to construct a viable argument that comprised more than swamping threads with pictures of girls arses, decidedly unfunny and irrelevant satirical memes and gigabytes of quotes from links that I suspect you read no further than the headline.
However, in more direct response, those who have known me longest will testify that there is no pretense in my posting. I am pompous and superior-minded, and I assure you that when in discussion with you it does come remarkably easy. I hope that you do not take it too unkindly when I suggest that I seek no respect from you or from those where you are from (Wherever the feck that might be).

Re: Standing for the Anthem
UG was undoubtedly the smartest poster on this board when I arrived. Big loss to the forum. Never encountered the other guy mentioned but I suspect he was a little too inspired for the in-crowd as well.
The Mayans only settled in the Yucatan between four and five thousand years ago, and the empire didn't reach its peak until the first millenia AD - entering its decline in the 10th century.
But I was just curious, because I'm not sure there is even any evidence of civilization as far back as 20,000 years ago. Seven or eight thousand years ago, maybe, though it's didn't really kick in until between five and six millenia ago; at least, if we are talking about organized townships.

Anyone can master pomposity on its own! Its the discipline of combining pomposity, superior-mindedness and a supremely pretentious approach - the triathlon of arrogance, if you will; that is the true measure of a confident, suit-wearing man.Buggaluggs wrote:Fuck off he is. I was, of course, referring to arrogance in its competitive Olympian sense. If one were to regard it in the context of spiritual fulfillment, Trinity would work.

And upon winning gold does one stand or sit for the anthem? And what do the losers do, stand or sit?SerjeantWildgoose wrote:I was, of course, referring to arrogance in its competitive Olympian sense. If one were to regard it in the context of spiritual fulfillment, Trinity would work.
If the winner sits for his/her anthem would it be more derogatory for the losers to stand?

Well here's the thing; if one does stand (And regardless of one's beliefs, failure to do so will only ever be regarded as a deliberate sign of disrespect) one needs to be sure that the fall of the suit trouser is correct. There is quite nothing worse than seeing some interloper standing rigidly to attention with 3/4 of an inch of white sock showing twixt brogue and cuff.
Of course you Scots types get over this by the judicious use of the spat. Not that you have done much standing on the winners' podium since Alan Wells hung up his spikes.

Re: Standing for the Anthem
Interesting team the Browns. American football actually got started in Ohio, which is why the Football Hall of Fame is there. I've made the pilgrimage personally. It spread firstly to Pennsylvania, then all the way to the East Coast and also Chicago. But pro football didn't really hit the West Coast until after WWII (the parent code, rugby, had retained a significant presence there previously). Anyway, Cleveland, the biggest city in Ohio, emerged as the dominant team of the post-War era, with legendary head coach Paul Brown at the helm, and the even more legendary running back Jim Brown leading the attack. The team were actually named after the former, but it was the latter who is remembered to this day as individual star of the team which won championship after championship. Unfortunately for the Browns, these halcyon days were to come to an end just a few years before the advent of Super Bowl in the late 60s. Not only are they one of the very few original teams (as in dating back to that era) not to have even played in the fixture, they nose-dived so badly at one point the franchise was sold to Baltimore and re-branded the Ravens, where it soon met with more success, actually winning the Super Bowl just 4 years ago! Meanwhile, a completely new Browns franchise was set up in Cleveland, but it hasn't fared any better than its forebear.
