Saying all the right things. Whether Cockerill works long term or not, you would think they will have a stronger start as they needed a shakeup.

Only issue I can see is of McInally gets called up to the AIs in place of an injured Brown.

Although I thought the 20s hooker looked a prospect.

It's definitely path of least resistance for him. But although this may have been an SRU call I would hope/expect RC was given some input even if just to say whether Turner was in his 1st choice team plans or not.

It's hard to gauge how Toonie/SRU see the 3rd choice hooker for Scotland. McInally was injured in the summer and Turner toured but never got game time. Makes a lot of sense for one of McInally and Turner to go on loan given the circumstances.

Without Brown Glasgow are weak at hooker. If Turner can't beat one of MacArthur and Malcolm (if not both) to the matchday 23 then he's not going to make it.

I see that Alex Glashan is playing sevens for Leicester. Guess that means that he's no longer attached to the academy (may be too old now)? Anyone know one way or the other?

No idea. He isn't listed in the academy list.

Vellacott playing for Gloucs is SQ and has player age grade for us.

Rumoured 1st 3 games:
Blues (A)
Dragons (H)
Treviso (H)

A good opportunity for a decent start to the season if true.

Edinburgh are touring SA when Scotland play Oz. Not an easy ask.

But they'll be doing it in a swanky new kit...

Edinburgh really should have taken a risk on Jackson this year. The squad looks good enough to compete with the exception of 10. He may have failed spectacularly but they need to try something.

Team up for first friendly tomorrow. Looks not that far off first choice with a few obvious exceptions. Any idea is Fruen is injured?

Interesting bench with Farndale, Fife and Johnstone all named. Assume that they're part of the sevens set up but that macrae will be familiar with them. 18 on the bench, including two scrum halves but only one loosehead seems a bit strange however.

Is Kennedy injured?

here's the injury update:

Following today’s announcement of the Edinburgh squad to play Sale Sharks in a pre-season friendly at Meggetland on Friday 18 August (kick-off 7.35pm), Edinburgh Rugby continues to manage a number of players back from injury.

Sidelined this week with short-term niggles are Damian Hoyland (groin), Robbie Fruean (knee), Kevin Bryce (knee) and Magnus Bradbury (knee).

Prop Alasdair Dickinson continues on a course of rehab from a foot injury suffered last season. During the rehabilitation period, a shoulder issue was discovered and it was deemed appropriate to resolve that with surgery to allow a smooth transition back to rugby around December time.

Wing Duhan van der Merwe (hip) and centre Mark Bennett (knee) are also scheduled to return before the new year.

Props Allan Dell (back) and Rory Sutherland (groin) face less of a wait and are expected to return in October and November respectively. Meanwhile, following his performances for Fiji in the summer internationals, Bill Mata is expected to return to the capital at the start of the season once his visa has been renewed.

Finally an explanation on Dicko. How hard would that have been to give earlier?

Given the return date is December I'd hazard a guess that the exact shoulder issue was possibly only diagnosed very late on maybe June/July.

Good to know he didn't just retire and they'd forgotten to mention it.

I honestly thought it must have been a career ender given the silence & the prop signings. Not particularly pleased that it shows Edinburgh is poorly run.

I imagine Dickinson will retire after the RWC.

Ryan Grant training with Edinburgh. Makes sense given the shoulder injury to Dickinson.

Seems McCallum went well at loosehead on Friday too. He is a serious talent IMO and with him, Fagerson, and Rae it is great to see young Scottish props come through.

Baggott apparently looked decent too.

Yep. Not had anything even approaching depth in the front row as long as I've been watching the game. Could actually be in a decent enough place in a few years?

I've. It seen Grant play in a long time. It would be interesting to see if anything can be sparked of him old self.

Grant is a tricky one he's obviously done in terms of ever challenging for Scotland places, but if he has anything left to offer at club level a short term deal could help Embra and put him in the shop window.
