You're thinking of "Ungentlemanly conduct" which is a great law.

I'd like to question the physics of the original premise - if you are running forward and throw the ball vertically up into the air, the ball will not continue travelling at the same speed as the player, but will slow with wind resistance quite quickly. So the player would have to be running full tilt and then hammer on the brakes pretty sharply in order not to overrun the ball, at which point he would get demolished by the cover defence and probably get his face pressed into the mud for being a cheeky tw*t.

Now this answer, I like. Mostly because it raises something I hadn't thought of. I'm not sure how much part air friction would play in a small "toss" (as it were) but you may well be right. If so, to overcome this would involve throwing the ball forwards; BZZZT!

There was a rugby dump video about a year ago with a Scottish school boy doing it, he chickens out the catch and kinda hits it up in the air, the defender stops and the player runs in to score

If u intentionally did it, the ref would ping u
