It'll only be an issue when Liam reaches the end of his contract I believe. Same with any of the players over the border like Moriarty, Francis etc.
When their current deal is up come to play in Wales or you don't play for Wales (unless you have 60plus caps)

Interestingly uncapped players are exempt from the rule until the end of the contract during which they are first capped:
An uncapped player may also be selected for Wales at any time from any club, but likewise must sign to play in Wales upon the completion of their current contract in order to continue to be selected.
So young players are completely free to play where they like at the start of their careers. I guess the WRU must reckon most of the young WC players will be coming up in the regional academies. And they'd like a free hand to snap up anyone with a Welsh granny wherever they may be in the world...

Good point.

By the time his contract runs out he should be pushing 60 caps, it's a three year contract so he currently has 43 apps, if you factor in 4 AIs and 5 6N games per year even if he doesn't play in all of them he should get to the total, and the World Cup of course.

And by that time it will be adjusted again at the request of the new coach .
There will have to be a clause in there for people who are not offered a reasonable contract by the Welsh regions as it was in the case of Charteis and if Gareth Davies is to be believed it will only get worse.

Who would have credited the WRU to have the foresight to come up with this

Well done to them though

So the WRU have given Webb a special dispensation to allow him to play for Wales in the last 6 months of his Toulon contract. This is welcome. But since they're bending the rules, why didn't they give him a 3 year dispensation at the start (since the original rule change came after he signed the Toulon contract)?

Anyway, hope he stays fit enough to get some well-deserved caps.

That's a joke considering he's just missed the World Cup, a tournament where he would have been useful and all this does is make him available for this years 6 Nations. I have no idea what his form is like in Toulon but I would imagine he would oust Aled Davies as 3rd choice, tho being as Davies is young enough to feature at the next World Cup will Pivac drop him? Could we see Kieron Hardy maybe?

If Webb's playing at anything like his previous level, Aled is out. And I see Hardy more likely to come in when Webb gets too old. But anyway, Pivac should just concentrate on putting the best team together right now. The RWC should not be a concern.

Well the reports are saying Webb won't play again for Toulon according to their owner, due to him being underhand with this Ospreys deal, he'll need to be playing I would think to get selected, otherwise the message it sends to other players isn't good.

If he wasn't playing because of bad form or injury, I'd agree.
But Wales won't exclude him due to this petulance, especially after they've gone to the trouble of bending the rules for him.

I get a bit fed up with comments about only picking players who will be in contention for the World Cup. Whilst the World Cup would be an amazing thing for wales to win, we have to be realistic and say it it would be a very difficult thing to achieve. Meanwhile we have better chances of winning 6 nations, grand slams etc. I don’t want to just get excited every 4 years, I want to feel that confidence very year. Use most of the best players available at any one time whilst bringing in new blood along the way.

I agree to a point. A coach now is appointed for a four year period (normally) and has to have an eye on the RWC. The six nations is a tournament to be won in its own right and the best players should be in the team, not future prospects. Unless a younger player is kicking at the heels of an older one and isn’t much of a step down then the best player should be there.
Sadly that just leaves the summer tour and autumn internationals for development which is bonkers when you need strength in depth. Even more
So that if we used the AIs as development games and lost all four then the media would judge that a failure.
Shame the A side isn’t playing.

Read the post again and you'll see that I was merely making mention of what the coaches thoughts might be so I'm not sure why you have become fed up, I find your post a little confusing, you are saying we realistically don't have much hope of winning the World Cup, despite just having got to the semi finals where we were narrowly beaten by the now Champions? I would say that the best side should be played in all 6 Nations games other than against Italy perhaps.

My comment was not aimed at any post particular by you. I was merely saying that many people on various rugby forums including this one, often bring up the topic of the World Cup. We have just got over a World Cup and the next one isn’t for a while. Who knows how many good players may crop up before then. Meanwhile, I feel we should concentrate on getting the best results in the here and now. You seem to agree with that with reference to the 6 nations. Regarding us reaching the semi finals twice recently. Yes it was a brilliant achievement. I would love us to win the World Cup, but realistically I don’t feel we will win it in the near future and we shouldn’t put all our eggs in the same basket. Regular success in major competitions such as the 6 nations keeps me and many other supporters happy, and we can still dream too
