Indeed - it depends what you mean by 'start' - I was reflecting 1 day in before the kicky, swimmy events were moving..

I think the rowing and track cycling were/are due a bit of regression. They have been so dominant for a while that they were due to have one Olympics where there were less medals won.

7s medalists all from the southern hemisphere. Is this anything to do with the inability of some teams to train properly due to Covid handling by national governments? I'm thinking of the Rio silver medalists in particular.

Also, there's been very intermittent funding for British 7s over the past few years. RFU, WRU, and SRU have all withdrawn support for their teams in various measures and that's left them dependent on lottery funding to even stay professional.

The fall from silver to 4th stings for the guys but that silver medal team relied on a 5-0 win A.E.T in the quarters and a 2 point victory over SA in the semis. And NZ were spectacularly shit last time and they are clearly very good this time.

The funding has fallen away but the margins are quite fine for any side not named Fiji or NZ so there isn't a lot in it.

Ieland are still quite a young/new 7s team too to be fair.

Been watching the video of the mens 4x200m. The contrast between James Guy crying as Duncan Scott was powering them home compared to Scott being disappointed at missing the WR made me chuckle.

Don't know. Stom noted they had not wanted it in advance so I assume there was something said. Certainly they take a view that politics isn't welcome, and yet religion it would seem is, whether the group Christian circle, catholics marking the cross, muslims kissing the ground, and to me it's all just politics

For someone who maintains an aversion to politics in sport, you do seem to swipe at some very daily mail "issues".

You think the Mail pokes fun at religion? I don't mind you've not read the Mail, why would anyone, but you've got the wrong impression of the blighters.

Whatever the games/sports do allow religious observances, so it seems hypocritical they'd note they didn't want to take people to take a knee or wouldn't cover that. What you could criticise is I've never checked what if anything the IOC has said on the matter, I'm merely taking the concerns Stom noted and taking the piss about possible double standards

True, but the rowers have regressed more than one might have expected.

The rowing group think they're getting things right but there's a transition as they shift to a new style with Grobler having left. They could well be right, we shall see in time. Certainly they're not alone in trying to reform using criticism as a driver to improvements citing a greater concern for mental health

Yep Grobler a big loss and not much time to adjust. Its a disappointing effort though- the men's 4 in particular made a pretty basic error. As far as I know, they still get chunky funding.

Watching the C1 canoe slalom is the most interesting sport I've seen so far. In both men's and women's events you can really see how the winner is working with the water and it's all smooth technique, and competitors who look like they are trying hardest are definitely going to be slower.
