And, look at that, Trump has graciously decided not to impose his tariffs that were due to start Feb 1st for those defending Greenland. TACO proving to be the only immutable constant of his Presidency.

Mark Carney's Davos speech is worth listening to, admitting that we've all been going along, complicit to the hegemony, the half-truth of a rules based world order because it benefited us, and that now we're being treated like weaker countries have always been, we have to change course. The decision is correct, the reason, well it will have to do. But it sounds like Canada is taking big steps to make itself less reliant on the US . . . as should we all. Ah, never hated Brexit more than I do now.

The first minute is in French, so stick with it.

Jesus, what a speech. What kind of world are we living in that we're relieved at this speech??

No matter what he says, we need to defend Greenland from the US. We have to plan for the worst, in case this dick changes his mind again.

I hear that Trump is demanding that Carney hand over his standing ovation.

Either way, TFFTACO

Yet we're already caving in and playing the game again...you have to wonder what it takes for politicians to actually put the needs of their constituents first

This isn't a deal, it's just Rutte talking to his daddy.

Denmark/Greenland/the EU would be insane to allow the US to increase its military presence on the island under current circumstances. A potentially hostile military can't be allowed to outnumber friendly forces.

Existing treaties already allow it though. To block it, they'd actually be breaking the 1951 treaty where the USA handed official control of Greenland back to Denmark after annexing it during WW2*, which would give Trump the casus belli that he's so sorely lacking right now.

Puja

*Said treaty was itself dictated as a Hobson's choice at gunpoint to Denmark as the USA refused to countenance removing their military bases or troops and were quite content to keep it as an American protectorate if Denmark wasn't happy about them being there.

Drag heels, obstruct, hold out till Trump croaks. Match anything they do with (real) NATO troops. Facts on the ground matter right now, not treaties which Trump ignores anyway.

Once again, the real world has beaten satire to death and thrown its corpse into a river.

$1BN to join the board of evil. Is that paid to the US or Trump?

Calling it "the Board of Peace" is a bit like a country calling itself "the Democratic Republic" - it's trying so hard that we can all see the lie.
