Eratosthenes' measurement of the circumference of the Earth was remarkable, but still 10-15% out (depending on how long a "stade" was). He used an inaccurate measure of the distance from Alexandria to Aswan (a hard thing to measure accurately in those days), and incorrectly assumed the Earth was a perfect sphere (as did everyone else). His methodology was good though. With more accurate data his method gives an answer about 0.16% out.

I saw a bit of it when I dabbled in insolvency work for banks (thank fuck those days are over). I'm sure there must be a source of these pidgin-legalese documents these nutters send in because they were all fairly similar, but I could never find it.

Someone once created some kind of bond on their laptop claiming my client owed them $7 trillion. When the client failed to acknowledge they claimed it had been accepted. For some reason they sent Hank Paulsen a copy. They then filed a winding up petition for non payment. We got an injunction to prevent advertising,

My Dad, in the 70's, was very big in the IPA. He was a proper policeman of economics and simultaneously a salvage artist,....and they loved him for it.

The costs for deactivation are one of the reasons why May is stalling. Decommissioning EDF's assets look like it's about to break them financially both now and in the future,.....and that would be bad news for the Chinese who have the same problem.
