He used an inaccurate measure of the distance from Alexandria to Aswan (a hard thing to measure accurately in those days), and incorrectly assumed the Earth was a perfect sphere (as did everyone else). His methodology was good though. With more accurate data his method gives an answer about 0.16% out.
Thank you - I was obviously thinking of the 2nd figure, and maybe exaggerating for effect.

Bare in mind that many politicians are bare faced liars. We know Ethelred was a proper liar.

If a politician can call it Greenland,......then we need to fuck these politicos up the arse with a red hot poker.
New South Wales - having visited, I can't say it really made me think of Old South Wales in any particular way.

Still, you've got to give credit to the criminals for abandoning the usual Australian literal naming system.
A territory in the north? Northern Territory
A state in the west? Western Australia
A state in the south? South Australia
A great big desert with lots of sand? Great Sandy Desert
A mountain range dividing the coast from the interior? Great Dividing Range

My favourite is the plain with no trees, except they got tricky and did it in Latin. Null Abor.

There are Twatts on Orkney and Shetland - I'd argue that Scotland is full of 'em.

Send him into space, let him see the earth, as a sphere. The look on his face.

But don't let him come back. The earth will be better off without him.

Does anyone have the slightest clue what this is all about?

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yes it's all about this Freeman on the Land bullshit. Makes no sense at all even when you know what it's about.

1st sentence: I'm none the wiser
2nd sentence: I like this, people should feel this way about more things. Then I wouldn't feel so alone all the time.

Wiki but accurate:
"Freemen" believe that statute law is a contract, and that individuals can therefore opt out of statute law, choosing instead to live under what they call "common" (case) and "natural" laws. Under their theory, natural laws require only that individuals do not harm others, do not damage the property of others, and do not use "fraud or mischief" in contracts. They say that all people have two parts to their existence – their body and their legal "person". The latter is represented by the individual's birth certificate; some freemen claim that it is entirely limited to the birth certificate. Under this theory, a "strawman" is created when a birth certificate is issued, and this "strawman" is the entity who is subject to statutory law. The physical self is referred to by a slightly different name – for example "John of the family Smith", as opposed to "John Smith".

They also often come up with half baked ideas to try and get themselves out of credit agreements and mortgages whilst keeping the goods/houses, none of which make any sense whatsoever.

The last sentence is mine not Wiki [citation needed].

There's similar bullshittery that goes on in NZ, except that it is usually also mixed up with Maori sovereignty claims as well.

I saw a bit of it when I dabbled in insolvency work for banks (thank fuck those days are over). I'm sure there must be a source of these pidgin-legalese documents these nutters send in because they were all fairly similar, but I could never find it.

Www.fmotl.com which doesn't seem as comprehensive or as entertaining as it used to be.
I just used to cut and paste a chunk of whatever crap they sent in and Google it.
Someone once created some kind of bond on their laptop claiming my client owed them $7 trillion. When the client failed to acknowledge they claimed it had been accepted. For some reason they sent Hank Paulsen a copy. They then filed a winding up petition for non payment. We got an injunction to prevent advertising,

Some quality posting this week, Fella. But shirely, you mean Robert Paulsen. (Meatloaf in Fightclub)

On the subject of fictional characters that we think will save us from the ravages of the self-interested......my Brother slapped me down during the Brexit campaign for thinking that Sir Humphrey would save us all.
Nix.

My Dad, in the 70's, was very big in the IPA. He was a proper policeman of economics and simultaneously a salvage artist,....and they loved him for it.
Now it's just a den of crooks. How many times do PWC have to be fined for conflict of interest before we say 'F*ck off you cheap w*nkers'.

Did anyone see this weeks Private Eye ?....EDF manages 58 reactors,......8 of them in England.
The costs for deactivation are one of the reasons why May is stalling. Decommissioning EDF's assets look like it's about to break them financially both now and in the future,.....and that would be bad news for the Chinese who have the same problem.
