Covid-19 aside, Sweden looks like a nice place to live, they're 7th in the World Happiness report:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Happiness_Report

Although they're behind all the other Scandinavian countries, they must be doing quite a few things right.

As with all these things, we should be guided by the evidence, not by anecdote or prior opinion.

A different metric (worldpop.revw)..
Suicide rates/100k, 2020

Belgium 20.7

Hungary 19.1
France 17.7
Poland 16.2
Austria 15.6
Sweden 14.8
Germany 13.6
Netherlands 12.6
Norway 12.2
Ireland 11.5

U.K. 8.8
Spain 8.7
Italy 8.2

Sweden have improved in this regard also over recent decades.
Russia & Baltic states are above Belgium.

Looks like active mingling gives some peace of mind, as well as risks. ;)

This report is not a true indicator of happiness. You shouldn’t take that as science, it’s far from scientific. In fact, it’s nonsensical pseudo science.

Agreed, I'm not taking it as a true indicator of happiness (what is?). But I'm taking it to be an indicator of a high level of desirable characteristics ie

Each variable measured reveals a populated-weighted average score on a scale running from 0 to 10 that is tracked over time and compared against other countries. These variables currently include: real GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption

My point is that Sweden is doing quite a lot of things right as a country (even if it is handling Covid-19 particularly badly). It is doing these things worse than its Nordic neighbours, however.

I once went to Sweden and met some nice people and drank some very expensive beer. Bugger the other metrics, I’d happily live there.

Police and protesters injured during a rally calling for death to spread under the banner of freedom. Outstanding work from the protesters coming so soon on the death of a Met Officer during the line of service, one can only hope all the protesters suffer huge strokes on the way home and cease their waste of oxygen

An article about Sweden and the UK government’s libertarian love in, without understanding the fundamentals.

No one has I suspect ever argued the Guardian understands fundamentals

Italy have followed fundamentals, apart from being slower to come out of lockdown:

"But for now the figures look promising. And that simple formula - tests, rules, compliance - will, this country hopes, halt a second wave and ease the legacy of pain from the first. "
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-54356335

Really expected a similar sort of national response here after the Spring onslaught, but there appears to be a mass memory lapse, or hubris, abound that spells danger.

Italy has a later return to school. So they might just be behind us on the curve, albeit perhaps now having in mind what happened to them and what's happened to us.

Good news in the UK that the R rate is heading back down, but seeing as it's probably still above 1 it's hardly cause for celebration

Agent Cummings and Goings obviously set a high bar for just how badly you could screw up and expect to keep your job, but for now at least he's been usurped by Margaret Ferrier in an outstandingly brazen refusal to stand down. To travel with symptoms was bad enough, to travel with symptoms to group with others worse, and I don't really know what to say about travelling on a train once you know you've got a positive result.

Virus to be gone by Christmas, perhaps some slim chance it'll carry on until next year. Which sounds like utter bollocks, but now as per Boris is the lates position of HMG's on the disease. Some chance that position will change later today or tomorrow

Boris is in charge, that is good, thus everything is good. All praise be to Boris.

"I tell you in all candour, it will continue to be bumpy through to Christmas and may even be bumpy beyond."

"Bumpy". That's like his description of global warming as a tea-cosy, swaddling the planet. The twat.

I'm particularly enjoying this one:
"What we want people to do is behave fearlessly but with common sense"

And bumpy is a long way into the sentence to start taking issue with the sentence. Of course it might be he simply doesn't know the word candour. Or it might be government message is intentionally about lying to us with a series of short term updates that too often make little to no sense in isolation or taken as a whole.

Yes, he may be familiar with the phrase "in all candour" - just part of his rhetorical toolkit - if not so clear about its meaning; but hey ho, meanings are for lawyers and girly swots.

Boom. Alec Guinness had to pop into the health department earlier to tell them the numbers they were looking at were not the numbers they'd been looking for.

It's not really good enough to call this an IT glitch, for something like this to cock up you need a bad understanding of what you're requesting of your IT service and/or a bad understanding of what you've received/tested from your IT service. Utterly inept barely does it justice.

Well, its not like its been rushed through without due consideration or anything like that is it?
