Pope, Tongue and Anderson out for Woakes, Wood and Ali with Brook moved to 3.

Firstly, Brook is the least experienced batsman England have, hasn't batted at 3 very often and doesn't really have the technique for it based on what we've seen over the series.

Tongue was pretty decent and Woakes hasn't played a 4 day game since early May.

They are clearly worried about the batting yet will not call up Foakes who has averaged a respectable 39 in the "Bazball" era and will save runs by his keeping being better than JB.
Not happy about that. Undercooked player, and previously undercooked player who hasn't played since and Wood....who is probably undercooked. Brook to 3 isn't great either.

Bairstow to 3 and Foakes keeping is a much better idea, though would leave us a bowler light/depending on Stokes.

Bit of a mess, all in all. Not sure we will see Jimmy again, though they'll be tempted by a last hurrah at OT. Quite interesting how bad his stats are v Australia in England, an anamoly.
Wood has to play I think. If England use him correctly being undercooked shouldn't be a huge issue. Wood should be bowling 3-5 over spells over 3 -4 spells of bowling. He is a potential point of difference whereas Woakes just isn't compared to Tongue and Anderson.

I was talking to my mate about Jimmy and Broad. Which career would you rather have? Both obviously terrific careers. Anderson had a huge amount of wickets and great spells but it feels like Broad has had the "moments" sports people live for. Several defining spells in Ashes (8/15 being the pick), that spell in SA in 16 or 17 where he rolled through them, a couple of spells where he ripped through NZ (home and away) and India too IIRC. Plus the 169 at Lords.

Confirmed lineup now. Stokes on record saying that he's worried about his ability to bowl longer spells and wanted to have a bowling attack capable of functioning if he was only able to bat.

That's going to be an issue to the long term balance of the side.

Having three undercooked is mad.
Jimmy just more reliable...you'd have either career in a heartbeat. Anderson slightly worse strike rate, though tended to bowl more overs as his economy rate is better.

It’s fair to say that Bairstow has been a key factor in a bad way in all three games to date. Ridiculous

It is terrible and avoidable.

Foakes would be forgiven for pissing himself laughing.

Big wicket on stroke of lunch.

Strange review. All the England players went up so they heard something.

That drop of Head is massive. Could have had them 5 down with all their gun batsmen gone.

This session has prob cost the ashes, specifically Root's drop of Marsh (and some pants bowling and Robinson hobbling off); Marsh has scored nearly a ton in one session!

We really have dropped the ashes in this series, and extra'd them. Its really careless tbh; Bazball not to blame, Cazball more like.

What a series this is tho.

Not sure our openers will fancy it at the moment either. Woods swinging it at 93 mph. What a shame poor lad hasn’t been fit for long periods

Certainly rattled Carey’s cage. Quite an English style collapse here.

Wood has been great all day. Bit worrying that Woakes seems to be struggling

Positive start to the innings, although I am worried about this batting lineup. There's only 5 wickets before you get into the bowlers and, with this top 6 and their aggressive style, 5 wickets isn't hard to get... and literally as I type Duckett goes playing an attacking shot.
