We could take a lot more gas from Gazprom like several other European countries.

So, we started a war in Syria 7 years ago in order to avoid running out of gas this Winter.
Right.
What does it have to do with a Russian chemical weapons attack in Salisbury?

I think you might have underestimated the importance of the natural gas market. This is potentially bigger than oil and the market is still up for grabs it is not yet a cartel.Stones of granite wrote:Oh, this is the "Syrian pipeline war" theory.kk67 wrote:It doesn't, we lost.Stones of granite wrote: I'm afraid that's no clearer. The title of the thread is anti-Russian rhetoric.......there's plenty of that going on.
This is all about commerce, most wars and standoff's are about money. The English didn't give a toss about Napoleon swanning around Europe and Africa until he closed the Portuguese ports.

I work in oil and gas, I don't underestimate the importance of it. I also know that the last thing that is needed to ensure a cheap (relatively) and stable supply of either oil or gas is a war.kk67 wrote:I think you might have underestimated the importance of the natural gas market. I have seen the source of the story of that the war in Syria was started because they wouldn't allow a pipeline through from Qatar, and it frankly isn't credible. There is already an oil pipeline that runs from Bahrain through Iraq and Turkey, and onwards into Europe. If a gas pipeline was required, then the obvious place to put it is on the same right-of-way. All the major problems are already solved.
The shortage of gas in the UK this winter is principally down to a lack of planning by the government (and Centrica). A major gas storage facility was closed last year because it wasn't considered worth spending any money fixing some of the safety issues it had, and it hasn't been replaced by anything else. With kind of short-sightedness and lack of strategic thinking, it's kind of hard to believe that they have a long term Machiavellian plan to secure cheap gas supplies through the instigation of wars, with all the unknowns and unexpected consequences that they bring. It's a nice sexy conspiracy theory, though, and I'm sure it brightens up a dull, cold winter's day and makes the world seem a little more interesting.

There is nothing I love more (well, there is, but we live in the age of hyperbole) NOTHING I love more than seeing a peabrained narcissistic fwcwit being publicly humiliated by simple, straight science. Fans of Craig Murray prepare, he's taken a pasting...

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I can assure you I get no frisson from conspiracy theories when they are accurate.
The idea was always regime change and the profits it brings. Less than 6 months after the gulf war Halliburton were making obscene profits and returning virtually nothing to the local population.
Iraq have the reserves as well.....they are in direct competition.

Re: Anti-Russian rhetoric
Iraq has a lot of oil, but only middling gas reserves. That is one of the reasons why putting a pipeline through Syria makes little sense. The infrastructure is already largely in place in Iraq, and it is more or less friendly territory.kk67 wrote:I can assure you I get no frisson from conspiracy theories when they are accurate.

If you want a conspiracy theory, then the countries with most to gain out of the Syrian conflict ar Iran and Russia.
Iran because it gives them the opportunity to outflank the Iraqis, and Russia because they now have an extensive military presence on the Mediterranean coast and friendly ports for their Navy on the Med side of the Bosphorus.

Yeah,...I'm always confusing Iran and Iraq.
It's the price that's the issue. If Qataar can flood the market with cheap gas they can undercut Gazprom who have massive reserves.
You'll know better than me but I'm fairly sure the gasline from Qataar would have to go through Syria. The existing oil infrastructure is secondary. I have a feeling they actually agreed to cooperate at one stage,.....then the West got involved and it all went tits-up.

Just letting you know now, as a courtesy, which is more than you deserve by the way, that this will be thrown in your face the next time you try to pull an appeal to authority about Seymour Hersch and John Pilger's various awards in the past. After all, you've just explicitly stated you believe the word of the Russian government's propaganda vehicle over a Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper.rowan wrote:As a neutral, I'll take RT over the Guardian any day. Re: Anti-Russian rhetoric
So to summarise the alternative viewpoint.
Don’t believe the British government because they lied in 2003.
Do believe Putin because he is an honest and upstanding citizen.
Poisoning people in rural British towns is fine .
The Russians were allowed to do it because the target was a cock.
The Russians were allowed to do it because sovereign governments in Eastern Europe went closer relations with NATO.
I think that covers most of the arguments from RT, Counter Punch, the Labour Party’s official spokesmen and whatever the fuck KK gets his information from.
Thankfully not everyone is that gullible.
