Which Tyler wrote:Better than anything I saw of Capaldi's run (not the actor's fault - Moffett overstayed his welcome); may have been trying a little too hard to introduce some diversity; but given the show's history, I don't have any problem with that.
Not exactly a classic, but we'll see - enough to get me watching again next week; whereas I gave up on Capaldi's run about half way through his first season - Ali still watched though, so I was often in the same room as the show, which didn't even try to engage me again.
You probably didn't stick around to see Capaldi's better episodes - I recall taking quite a while to get into his first series, which started with a few particularly poor stories. I think there were only 3 genuinely good episodes in all - albeit they were considerably better than Saturday's story. But his second and third series were generally stronger.
Moffat wasn't completely out of ideas but yeah, he had used his best ones for Smith's Doctor.

Puja wrote:It was pretty good and I liked Whitaker's Doctor almost immediately, but a bit of an average story. Plus, it's a little bit foreboding that the best the writers could come up with to motivate the two male companions was fridging their wife/nan. Lazy characterisation and poor writing all round.

I did find the supporting characters particularly bland. Not the actors' fault, but really uninteresting.
Whittaker was fine - I think they played fairly safe with her character.

Happy to see that the Paramount Channel is showing The Strain from the beginning. The best horror series on TV in recent years and one of the best series of any sort IMO.
Whether that means they'll eventually show the as yet unaired in the UK final series... we can only hope.

I got quite into that but missed a few episodes then never caught up. Will have to give it another go.

Narcos season 4, have they deliberately de glamorised the whole thing, good guys and bad? Still enjoying it but not the same which might be a good thing really

"A Very Secret Service" on Netflix. A satirical comedy about French spies in the 60's with episodes largely centred around decolonisation (Algeria, in particular), the Cold War, French bureaucracy, 60's culture shift and Frenchmen generally being Frenchmen. It's good stuff as long as you don't mind subtitles, or can parlez vous the Francais. Also features an episode focused on a 5N test.

Escape at Dannemora is quite good, on Sky Atlantic. Benicio Del Toro and Paul Danno play two inmates looking to escape prison, based on a true story.

I thought this was fucking great. Acting was brilliant from basically everybody. Does a very good job of making you ask yourself why you're rooting for these guys.
The freeze frames and all the madly stylised stuff was a weird addition, but really worked for me, for some reason.

I was even more impressed when I found out it was Ben Stiller directing it.
Also thought it was really good how they placed the flashback in as they escaped. As you say people would be rooting for then and then you are told just how much of a cunt they are

Aye, the backstory episode was much needed.

Half way through Das Boot and enjoying it, despite Lizzy Kaplan not being arsed speaking in French with all the frigs in the room but miraculously understating what they're saying. Not quite getting the claustrophobia that I did with the film yet.

Line of Duty started again yesterday, this is excellent drama imo, it should be good as Stephen Graham is playing the main baddie in this one.

I was curious about this simply because it’s got Vicky McClure in it. Stephen Graham is great in basically everything he’s in. It’s definitely not just like The Bill?

No, not like The Bill, Martin Compston is no Reg.
If you're keen to watch it you'll need to start from the beginning, the series' are not stand alone.
It's fundamentally about police corruption and the unit that investigates it, it makes for some compelling viewing.

My word they've started with even more of a bang this time!
