It totally is. He needs something he can signal as a victory. Expanding the size of the breakaway regions and claiming to have destroyed Ukrainian military capability might work with a lot of propaganda. Dictatorships don’t tend to survive failure for too long and he isn’t ignorant of that.Galfon wrote:Looks like sh*t or bust for VP in the east now;
will ego/fear of humiliation (and being removed..) override prospect of further massive losses in human and material terms, and tanking international standing.? seems past caring.
The number of persons directly affected (dead, disappeared, displaced) appears astronomical already.
As a Welshman I guess the message they're both trying to send to Putin with such a stunt would be encapsulated by the phrase 'ry'n ni yma o hyd er gweitha pawb a phopeth.'morepork wrote:What the fuck is he doing??? Why would you waste resources, time, and contested fucking air space for that?
Don’t panic. The Czech, Polish and Slovenian PMs have already wasted resources, time and contested airspace to visit Kyiv, as have a couple of the EU big wigs.morepork wrote:What the fuck is he doing??? Why would you waste resources, time, and contested fucking air space for that?
While I have a great amount of disdain for Boris and regard him visiting people as a punishment rather than a boon, Kiev isn't really contested airspace anymore and I'd imagine we've informed the Russians of both his flight path and the repurcussions should they attack his flight. It's not really a big risk like it would've been a fortnight ago.morepork wrote:What the fuck is he doing??? Why would you waste resources, time, and contested fucking air space for that?
No offense intended. Perhaps I have not heard the mood music. I do see a dick in a blue suit chasing some love online.Mellsblue wrote:Don’t panic. You might not be able to hear the mood music in Philly but the UK’s response to this ‘special military operation’ is actually close to, if not the, best in class as far as the Ukrainians and Volodymyr ‘Balls of Steel’ Zelenskyy are concerned:

Plane to Poland and then car journey the rest of the way, allegedly. U.K. security bods wanted him out of the country before releasing details, pics etc but the Ukraine Embassy in the U.K. got a bit over excited.Puja wrote:While I have a great amount of disdain for Boris and regard him visiting people as a punishment rather than a boon, Kiev isn't really contested airspace anymore and I'd imagine we've informed the Russians of both his flight path and the repurcussions should they attack his flight. No offence taken. You should treat any politicians actions with a healthy dose of scepticism and when it comes to the likes of Boris an unhealthy dose. I just feel that whilst the govt have rightly been given a shed load of bad press over refugees there should also be praise where it’s due. In this case we’ve led on intel, arms and sanctions.morepork wrote:No offense intended. Perhaps I have not heard the mood music. Sssshhhhh nothing must be written that doesn't show Boris or the UK in a negative light. This is the way.Mellsblue wrote:Don’t panic. Because we have supplied a shit ton of weaponry to the Ukrainians. They aint stupid.morepork wrote:What the fuck is he doing??? Why would you waste resources, time, and contested fucking air space for that?
Boris needs some positive optics and the Ukraininans need our weaponry. its a match made in convenience.Mellsblue wrote:No offence taken. Not convinced it’s all about optics - polls are overwhelming in favour of taking in more refugees - just that it’s in his wheelhouse. Covid was about interpreting detail and being cautious, this about being a bit gung-ho, sod the consequences and let’s be positive. He’s also always been very critical of appeasement. Now, if we get into the cagey territory of teetering on the edge of provoking nuclear war we might hope covid has taught him some lessons….Sandydragon wrote:

Disagree. Only a few weeks ago he was trying to guess how many letters the Chair of the 1922 Committee had received so anything that makes him look statesmanlike is to be grabbed with both hands.Ukraine has allowed him to rebuild his own brand and following the weekends revelations, Sunak is dead in the water for a while so Boris is flying high again.Mellsblue wrote:Not convinced it’s all about optics - polls are overwhelming in favour of taking in more refugees - just that it’s in his wheelhouse. Everything in his previous writings and actions would point to this response but won’t get into an argument about it.Sandydragon wrote:Disagree.
