I'd say they've done plenty to warrant that. The problem is the chaos that ensue and what would emerge as a leadership or groups contesting power, we've seen in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya that you simply can't decide they should have a nice functioning democracy, and it's likely far better to negotiate with what's in place than seek military change.morepork wrote:Digby wrote:Iran has done nothing is a rather odd line

Re: Trump
Apart from anything else, I think that a realistic assessment would come to the conclusion that an invasion of Iran by the US would be extremely difficult to carry off. In some peoples minds it might look like Iran and Iraq are similar equating to a similar result, but they are not. A combination of geography, a million man mobilisation potential, and a sophisticated domestic arms industry in Iran makes them a different proposition altogether.Digby wrote:I'd say they've done plenty to warrant that. Not that I am not suggesting that I would consider it justified in the first place, just that 2019 Iran is a completely different kettle of fish to 2003 Iraq.

Yeah, lets have some blue sky thinking around invading a sovereign state. Any group of people that consider 300 burgers and assorted luke warm congealed fast foods by candle light in the seat of their democracy is disqualified from authority. On anything. The most 'Murrican thing eva?

As is tradition, President Trump hosted the champions of college football, the Clemson Tigers, for a celebration of their athletic achievement at the White House on Monday.
The food he offered them was far less traditional.
Piles of burgers and fish sandwiches from McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King, still in their boxes and wrappers, were served on trays in the candlelit dining room. Tubs of dipping sauces were stacked in silver gravy boats. On another table, heat lamps kept French fries and Domino’s pizzas warm. Salads were available, too.
Class is permanent.

Re: Trump
Is it really a surprise?
Trump is well known to like fast-food (yes, really), and he probably thought this was the perfect way to bond with common folk.
How they kept the food warm for long enough is beyond me.
Congrats to the Clemson Tigers though...bet they won't bother trying to win next season though

I can absolutely see Trump trying to start this as a new tradition. It basically sums up his presidency - "Come have a meal in the White House - the President is Trump and the food is McDonalds and we're looking at replacing the White House with a prefab."

Actually, how many people on a football team? I don't even know how many players are on the field for a game of American Footie, and still less idea how much depth would be considered normal
But more than a thousand burgers is a hell of a claim. How many could a normal person eat with all that fat, sugar and salt before they'd simply retch?

According to their webpage, they have a roster of 99 players and 11 coaches. Still, 1000 "hamberders" seems a lot.Digby wrote:Actually, how many people on a football team? This is Trump we're talking about. 300 burgers gets expanded to 500 the first time he talked to someone about it, 700 within a few retellings, 900 within an hour, and by the end of the evening, it's "over a thousand".Stones of granite wrote:According to their webpage, they have a roster of 99 players and 11 coaches. Give it a day or two and it'll be, "The most burgers ever ordered by anyone ever. Really big burgers too - they wanted to give me the thin ones, but I insisted, I told them you know we want the biggest, best American burgers. It's true, it's true. Over five thousand and they ate them all. Loved them. Better than having fancy food like the Democrats wanted. Proper American food for proper Americans. It's true. They were happy to do it for the security if our country."

Par for the course if he's just bullshitting about the number. Otherwise 10 each in an hour is some going.Puja wrote:This is Trump we're talking about. 300 burgers gets expanded to 500 the first time he talked to someone about it, 700 within a few retellings, 900 within an hour, and by the end of the evening, it's "over a thousand".Stones of granite wrote:According to their webpage, they have a roster of 99 players and 11 coaches. It's been a while since I ate at McDonald's, I think I've had one sausage and egg mcmuffin this century, but aged 16 I'd have happily eaten two quarter pounders with fries and a milkshake, I probably could have put down 4 , but even as a hungry young adult 5 and above seems unlikely, maybe if stoned it'd be easier

Love Rudy...what a complete mong he is. Every time the idiot opens his mouth, he somehow makes things worse for the self-proclaimed genius who hired him.Digby wrote:Is Rudy the worst lawyer ever including Eugene?
Or is this a damage limitation strategy that he keeps admitting to his client's guilt as they know the jig is up?
Trump is a retard, but I honestly can't decide whether Rudy is above, or below him on that scale.
