Exactly my thoughts, not keen on that idea at all. Although it wouldn't surprise me from the Saints board.

I think Mike Ford a pretty decent coach who has shown some significant issues in leadership, whether he's learnt from mistakes I've no idea so he'd be a punt. I'm also a little surprised the board seem surprised at their actions, why haven't they already lined someone up?

But who would Ford undermine and stab in the back to get the full time job if he's appointed straight into it? That pretty much wipes out the first three months of his "How to coach" plan

Ah, but the thing is that Mike Ford's already made a commitment to building Dallas in the MLR for a 2019 entry. There's no way that he'd renege on a contract or stoop to dirty deali... I'm sorry, I really thought I could get through that with a straight face.

He was an eminence grise for England, I always thought; the defensive record was actually pretty strong, but it came at some cost.

I don't know if he was for England, I never had the impression he wanted to take on Johnno, it's maybe the one time I would say he hasn't been that.
And he is interesting in the way he sets a team up, in defence and in attack. It'd be much easier to make a call on him if we knew what on earth happened with Burgess, though for all the talk he'll knife others in the back he's stayed pretty much as quiet as everyone else involved in the Burgess saga in the hope if they all saying nothing it'll all be forgotten about, or indeed forgot about to keep some people happy.

He pre-dated Jonno don't forget- was in post for 2 years prior, when our rugby was totally desperate with him and Wells being uber conservative; admittedly they got to the final under Ashton in 2007, but it was leaden stuff. No sure anyone was challenging Jonno, which made his appointment double odd- no experience, and no-one with the cajonas to challenge and develop him.

Hard not to be conservative with Wells involved, though Deano manages it in patches

How does this differ to both the drift and blitz systems?

It's simple, IMO, if Saints want to improve they won't appoint Ford.

Part fair, part how are you supposed to do otherwise if you can't get Wells to agree on presenting fast ball when Wells wants safe ball?

Complain to the boss? My point being complicity or incompetence or lack of spine...or indeed all of them.

Err... Ford was defence coach, he agreed with Wells that secure ball was the be all and end all, and he didn't give a damn what the backs did with it once it arrives, his job was to stop then other team getting the ball.
Jonno, of course, was ruled by Wells'n'Ford - he didn't get in their way, so they didn't depose. Robinson and Ashton were both victims of the famous backstab manoeuvre.

as I said, eminence grise, complicit, and in the team sense, incompetent. In fairness, he does have a pretty decent record at drying up opposition tries, if they aren't SH teams. My view is that you have to do your role in an overall team construct- ultimately, the head coach has to decide this, and the other fall into line or sod off.

Eminence grise and complicit whilst lacking spine, he should go into politics.

Surely Ford is a little too tarnished for any board to hire?
If he wants back in the prem my guess it will be with a smaller club.
If they want someone to ignite Thier backline they should go for Dave Walder. Some not great players for Newcastle have developed thier attacking game a lot under him.

Yep. If I were E Jones I’d be having a chat with Mr Walder.

If no coach was found and Saints folded along with Wuss we'd be down to the 10 team league many people want
