At the moment it is still not as loud as the dog whistle immigration fiasco, but it's getting louder. From speaking with Whanau in Christchurch, it seems that conversation is centre stage there too. I hate that it has taken this event to get that issue out in the open, especially as the city has had a lot of issues with the dog whistle shit for a long time.
An NZ poster on another forum I post on says that Christchurch has had a huge problem with nazis. He is a local and doesn't usually post about politics or any thing like that. He made a massive post basically saying he has noticed these people but thought they weren't a real threat. This has obviously changed his view.

What are your experiences?

Depressing levels of ingrained lazy cultural stereotypes traditionally leveled at Maori. A lot of fair weather skinheads taking their frustrations out on Asian students. The city has been a focal point for an offshoot of the National Front for some time, to the point of the organisation putting forward candidates for mayoralty. Christchurch has long been associated with the tag of the most Anglosized city in NZ, but has a sizable Kiwi-Chinese population that has been there since at least the mid 19th century (mainly following a couple of gold rush economic opportunities) and about an hour out of the city is the site of the last big signing for the Treaty of Waitangi, at Ōnuku (Okains bay). It's more diverse than many of the locals are aware, but all has been buried under decades of promoting the "Englishness" of the city, and this has unfortunately resulted in a lot of faux outrage from ignorant NF-type individuals that regularly hijack things like ANZAC day to push a white pride narrative. The labour and academic holes left by the earthquakes have resulted in an influx of more diversity, and the internet meme-fuelled angry millenials have attacked that diversity. It's my city of birth and for me a gateway to mountains and braided river valleys, but I have to say it's always been a place where extreme domestic white agitators have been inappropriately drawn. All this being said, the weight of recent natural and man made tragedy has thrust altruism front and centre. If we embrace that now, and promote a hard, overdue dialogue, I suspect the days of dog whistle nonsense are numbered. Other posters on here from Chch may have a different, possibly more nuanced take on events, but at the moment I am just really down on this current situation because there is no justification for it ever needing to happen. In the words of someone from my adopted home here in the US, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Really interesting stuff. Thanks for the post. One thing I know is that there is no "debate" to be had or wringing of hands. You just put the hammer down on these c.unts. The only way to stamp out these nazis is with violence. They have set out their stall and you have to react.

This is a real eye-opener and thanks for all of you Kiwis for being so candid. I have to say that I always assumed NZ to be a model of pluralism (Your appalling treatment of those charming Gypo-hoores who legged-it from your cafes and left their crap all over your parks aside).

I had no idea that you were, in fact, just Mississippi with sheep.

Sorry for keeping this alive, but the owner of this company charged with distributing objectionable material following the attacks. Also previously convicted for leaving severed pigs heads at relevant mosques. Do we have a racism problem? Yeah.

Ii does seem bizarre you could walk into a retailer and buy semi-automatics, assaul trifles and high-capacity magazines -hardly for practical hunting or pest control reasons..definitely more alarming than passionate stamp or garden-gnome collecting it would seem.
A short while ago in uk you'd struggle to get hold of a beer or another type of magazine on Sunday.
NZ still carries the 'conservative' tag in distant reporting, so seeing these large military style weaponry merchants doing their stuff looks a wee out of place.
Not that it will ever stop doods getting hold of gear like this if desperate, but shouldn't be made easy shewerly.
