Highlighted for you...

It's the common propaganda spouted by right wings across the world. It puts the blame for the situations people find themselves in at the feet of minorities who cannot stand up for themselves why rich white (or brown, it's true in India, too) politicians avoid the flack for making life worse for 90% of people.

For a start, equal rights doesn't mean preferential treatment. It means equality. At the moment, you can be fired for being gay. You can be fired for being trans. Gay panic is still a valid murder defence in many states - that means it's considered legally legitimate to say, "I killed him because he was gay and that scared me" and have it count as a mitigating factor. It's legal to discriminate against gay people for adoption, for social services, for medical services, for legal services.

Things are not equal currently. Minorities are not getting preferential treatment. Saying "equality is getting crammed down our throats" alongside "I remember when we had our own politics and accepted each others views even if we disagreed" heavily implies that a) you think minorities currently have more rights than you'd like them to/than they deserve and b) that you wish people would stop getting cross at you for your perfectly reasonable opinion a.

That may not be what you meant to say. It is what's coming across.

Oh Donnie, why would you give us a feed line like that? Of course we believe you'd say something inappropriate even when it's clearly not a good idea to do so. That's basically your brand in a nutshell.

I've no idea what Coco is referring to, but that is not just a top comment, but also post of the day Puja [emoji122][emoji106]

I'm a strong believer in equality, regardless of race, religion, gender and self-identity. We're all just people at the end of the day.

This story has legs!

Of all the shit that orange twat in an ill-fitting suit and tie has done since being inaugurated...in fact no, make that since he was born, this could be the thing that sees him get in some serious shit.

Kinda ironic really considering all the shit he has got away with before.

It really is a master class in how not to conduct foreign policy. A clown president leans on a stand up comedian president to seek domestic leverage over a political opponent, using a civilian lawyer that looks like a cafe extra in a childrens goblin movie.

There are many more instances of blundering incompetence that it could seem at a glance to be deliberate, but I honestly believe he is simply that fucking stupid. The State Department and intelligence services are basically working around him as much as practically possible to avoid his inevitably painting them into a corner.

Thats my point.. equal treatment, equal pay, equal consideration. No preferential treatment under the guise of equality. Equal = Equal. Doesnt matter who, what, when, where, or why.

You cannot be fired for being gay or trans... brown, green, or polka dotted, christian, mormon, quaker, jewish, muslim, catholic, have tattoos, no teeth, freckles, warts, male pattern baldness, erectile dysfunction, heavy periods, or believing in bigfoot in the USA. There are laws against discrimination, and the vast majority of employers take that kind of thing seriously. I highly doubt many, if any people get fired for being gay or trans. I cannot imagine a pink slip having "homosexuality" or "transgender" listed as the reason a person was let go from their job. You can speculate, but its just that... a speculation. Maybe they were late too many times, maybe their job performance was not up to par.

I take stuff like that serious. As a business owner, I have had to deal with similar accusation... it really pisses me off.

Where is gay panic a legal defense for murder, or any sort of violence? Is it on the books or did some boneheaded judge / jury acquit a homophobe of murder somewhere? A mitigating factor may have more to it than that... would be informative for me to be able to read the case transcript to see how that was considered. If that was the deciding factor somewhere in the USA, then it was an absolute fluke... for crying out loud.

My comment on 'remembering a time when'... I remember a time when discussing your political views was frowned upon. It was not an appropriate topic of conversation, as it was understood that everyone has differing opinions and beliefs... and that was ok! It was something very personal and private, and by keeping it out of conversations, the partisan divide did not seem so extreme.

I dont condone inequality.. in fact I think things are better now than ever before and only getting better. Not perfect by any means. I hope that one day... soon... people in general will realize we all are human amd pretty much want the same things. Sometimes I think dividing us in to little boxes according to our differences defeats progress. Those things are such a miniscule factor in who each one of us "are".

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act has regularly been challenged by employers as not applicable to sexual orientation and transgender people, and is being aggressively challenged by the current administration. Only about 20 states have active statutes that prohibit discrimination against gender identity and sexual orientation. FYI, many people get fired for being gay or trans and there is are three cases of such due to air in the Supreme Court next year as the second circuit inconsistencies mean that Title VII is still not universally binding as far as sexual orientation and the definition of discrimination go.

Yes he did, along with a raft of other initiatives for minority civil rights. It seems that some people in the majority now want to complain at the injustice of not being a minority.

Digby wrote:Does anyone know what's happening with the complaint in the intelligence community that's being held up by the Director of National Intelligence and the Justice Department?

if anyone hasn't heard there's been recently a complaint (actually another complaint) made by a whistleblower somewhere in the government circles, this one is in the intelligence community and the complaint was properly made to the office of the Inspector General, the IG then looked into the complaint and found it to be credible and urgent. The IG is then required by law to send the whistleblower report to the relevant department head, and this being an intelligence matter it went to the Director of National Intelligence (or actually this being the Trump administration if went to an acting head) and the head of the DNI has 7 days to notify the appropriate congressional committee so they can commence investigation and/or hearings. But despite the DNI being required by law to notify the relevant congressional committee they've received and urgent and credible whistleblower report they're refusing to pass on that info saying it's confidential and applies to a person outside the intelligence community.

Which means in essence there's an urgent and valid/credible complaint about say Trump, or possibly Ivanka or Jared that the DNI are refusing to see investigated. Flood the swamp, flood the swamp...
So it would seem the complaint was about Trump, and it's still a mess.

There's also another whistleblower complaint around the pressure that Trump (or his minions) are bringing to bear on the tax authorities around Trump's tax affairs, possibly related to an audit of his tax. And this one is even better hidden as a process than the failure so far to act on the intelligence complaint.

We can only hope the Dems and future Republicans stop this nonsense that the executive acts as a monarch

More likely - he thought it was a tutorial, a "how to enact religious persecution"
