Half way thru season 1 of The Boys and I absolutely love it. By turns funny, irreverent, gross, shocking, it's great TV.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Also season 2 of Succession... even better than season 1, I think, altho they are on the verge of overplaying some of the characters.

Filming of Line of Duty series 6 ongoing, possibly for viewing Feb 21.Talk of Bodyguard 2 and Life on Mars 3 too - Not sure how the latter will pan out but most of the original cast are up for it I believe. (back-watching en-bloc these with G jnr who is now of age to appreciate, and get some decent beers in.. )
Big tip-of-the-hat to writer/producer Jed Mercurio and many of the actors..Dunbar, Sim, Madden, Hawes et al. Long list tbf.

Yes. It’s dumb and pretentious at times, but really surprisingly profound.paddy no 11 wrote:I'm about a week from finishing season 6 of Bojack Horseman - what a show
The whole anti-hero thing (or just having your protagonist be a total dick head) is so easy to do if you never actually address why someone behaves like that, but they do it perfectly without ever apologising for the way he behaves.
It’s also basically the only use of puns I’ve ever seen that is actually funny.

Binged on some TV from the last few years.
Watched all 3 seasons of Hannibal. Superior stuff, really classy TV, albeit one could argue that the whole murder as installation art thing is totally sick.
The Leftovers. Started very well, very well written and generally put together, first season was good, next 2 not nearly as good. It's never clear what the show is trying to say. Ultimate ending (and explanation) unsatisfying and pretty stupid.
Also checked out some Anime with the kids. Hunter x Hunter is brilliant, sure, a little childish in some ways, but a great action show. Slightly hard to categorise compared with US/UK shows.

There was something incredible about the Leftovers at the same time as being absolutely all over the place. Maybe it's a cop out but I'm not sure if a tale of existential angst could really have a satisfying ending.Son of Mathonwy wrote:Binged on some TV from the last few years.

I've heard people with similar tastes to me recommend Hannibal. I feel like I tried 1 episode a few years back and couldn't even make it through. Does it take a while to get going?

Of course the Leftovers isn't unique in being initially interesting, then deteriorating as things are explained. The first episode is brilliant (and well written, staged etc), it throws out a lot of fascinating unknowns eg what was the Departure, what are the GR all about, what is Holy Wayne providing?
But it's all quite disappointing. The GR's crede seems to be a secret, so why would anyone join them when their main characteristic is to act like arseholes to everyone (including each other)? And their crede is to essentially make themselves blank (wear white, not speak, have no human ties) as if that would somehow remind everyone about the Departure (despite having no opinion of what the Departure actually was).
It's left ambiguous whether Holy Wayne actually had any supernatural abilities or role. We have no idea why Tom wanted to join his cult.
At least the nature of the Departure is explained in the final episode. But can we possibly believe that Nora, having spent years trying to reach her children, doesn't even speak to them and simply returns to our world (but becomes a recluse)? Can we believe that Nora is the only person who wants to return from the other world? Or that the existence of the other world hasn't been revealed by messages being sent back, even if no one returned?
And what is Kevin's problem? He didn't lose anyone in the Departure (unlike Nora who has plenty to be depressed about). I guess we're just following someone with clinical depression, blackouts and schizophrenic visíons for 3 seasons. And his near-death experiences, while fun, really tell us nothing - it's not even clear if they're real or imagined.
Hannibal is really worth sticking with. I wouldn't have said that it takes time to get going, but it does improve during the course of the first season. The show is pretty unusual for having psychopathic genius in the title role and a highly disturbed and odd main character. By the third season it leaves the viewer without an obvious character to identify with.

The missus and I watched Us the other week. One of those shows that I didn't think I'd enjoy, but was far better than I expected.

Sneaky Pete.
Think Numbers mentioned this show a while back.
The first series was superb. Second not too shabby, but the third has been a massive pile of wank. It's all over the shop with reveal after reveal and pointless side stories.
Can see why it was cancelled.

My gods, you have missed out on one of the truly great shows. The first season* is a little hit and miss (some appalling episodes mixed in with the good), but is necessary to set up the next three seasons which are some of the most incredible television you will ever see**.Which Tyler wrote:Consider it added to the list, I never got into it originally - wrong time of day.Son of Mathonwy wrote:Babylon 5 = the 90sWhich Tyler wrote:X-Files

*Don't watch the pilot film "The Gathering" as it's shit and gives you nothing that the first season doesn't give better. Just start straight on S1E01.
**NB - some of the SFX are dated, but considering it was CGI in the 90s that was literally done on Amigas, they're incredible. Also, if you can find a copy of the DVDs, that's better than what's on streaming as some of it was "remastered" by a drunken chimpanzee.

Iindeed the first season has too little 'big story arc' and too many 'average TV SF' episodes and the last season was a little empty of big plot (because they thought the series might be axed after the 4th, so the creator/writer put most of the last 2 seasons' story into the 4th - the upside being that the 4th is amazing). And there are several boring US military-type characters.
Other than that, the story is incredible, the characters are excellent, the spaceship designs are more imaginative than anything else and the effects (cutting edge at the time) are still good, if low-resolution.

True, the X-Files was huge but I was never particularly sold on it. The leads were brilliant, but the thing was too episodic and self contradictory for me. And it ripped off the FBI and paranormal elements (not to mention David Duchovny) from the vastly superior Twin Peaks, so it had offended me from the start .Which Tyler wrote:Consider it added to the list, I never got into it originally - wrong time of day.Son of Mathonwy wrote:Babylon 5 = the 90sWhich Tyler wrote:X-Files

Quite honestly, 9.00pm was a terrible time for me to be watching TV in the 90s (through to 2003). I'd typically be studying until 10.00; and from 95 onwards, I'd then be hitting the bar rather than the telly.
That's what GCSEs then A-levels and onto the MSc meant, I guess - especially as I was NOT a natural student who just had to glance at things once.
ETA: Also a very honourable mention for This Life - which we watched between lockdowns, and inspired this 90s revival - I still love it; and the 10 year renunion is still not worth it

Yeah, Twin Peaks is classic 90s, early 90s. Actually, now I think of it, all the best Simpsons were 90s.Which Tyler wrote:Dammit! another to add to my list. The new Twin Peaks is worth looking at. Although, of course it's not as good as the original, how could it be? The focus is quite different - the FBI, including Lynch, are in it much more (which is great), a lot of very bizarre time is spent with Cooper and many of the Twin Peaks residents really only have cameos. It's possibly even stranger than the original.
This Life is definitely worth a mention, it's so totally 90s. I was pretty much glued to it at the time. Ally McBeal is probably also worth a mention, from the same time, very very 90s.

Re: Good TV Shows
I loved the first series of Twin Peaks then was thrown off by the second series being about 40 episodes. Does it maintain that quality? I've also heard the third series is great but would obviously be pointless until I've seen the second, and possibly the film?
