I wish I could stop opening this thread. It’s just endless, massive horrible headlines but I don’t think anyone actually has anything to discuss anymore.

Yeah, indeed. It's all just normalised...which is painful. And the democrats in the US are just spineless sycophants, too, so it's not as if they have a functioning democracy to fall back on.

The Democrats' cave-in on the shutdown was staggering. Have to say this can't be mere spinelessness. This looks like corruption. The shutdown was hurting the Reps, it killed them in the recent elections, and it was the only way to get what the Dems wanted. The promise of a vote, in a house where they're the minority (and that's just the first hurdle) is obviously worthless. They sold out ordinary people and it would be fascinating to know what they got for this betrayal.

It will just result in more gormless punitive knee jerk. Every Pearl clutching response is backed by the vast resources of the Federal government, which is itself unraveling at an alarming rate. No SNAP food program, public employees not getting paid, science surrounding acute public health issues triaged with callous indifference and the cancer of free market dogma about to go metastatic. Totally FUBAR. The Cherry on the top is the spineless caving into bullying by the opposition.

Sorry, I thought Bluesky embedded now.

The House of Representatives voted 285–98 in favor of a resolution condemning socialism.
An amendment to said bill to also condemn fascism was voted down

On the day Mamdani's due to meet Trump for the first time. Absolutely baffling that Hakeem Jefferies and the Democratic leadership are willing to engage with blatant Republican shitposting against what is ostensibly a member of their own party, even though he had the gall to win an election even when they told him he wasn't electable. Just abstain en masse and treat this kind of comedy politics with the respect that it deserves!

They're just absolutely desperate to make sure that everyone's aware they're sensible, reasonable, electable centrists with no intentions of doing anything upsetting like improving people's lives, which I'm sure will save the country. After all, "We have no beliefs except Not Donald Trump" worked out just splendidly for them last election, so I'm sure it'll be fine going forwards.

I assume the 86 Democrats who condemned socialism will be voting to shut down medicaid, medicare, the US Postal Service and all other examples of socialism in the US.
