And this week too, after I don't know how many briefings he's had on covid-19, it's not even something he said in ignorance back in February, and for someone in his position it'd have been appalling ignorance back thenBanquo wrote:noooooooooooooooooDigby wrote:I shit you not that fat twat actually said thatBanquo wrote: say what?

Is what's at the heart of the problem that those controlling religious groups are worried that any understanding of science will push out religion from the lives of the populace?Son of Mathonwy wrote:That's set back popular US understanding of viruses and bacteria by at least 50 years.Banquo wrote:christ on a bikeDigby wrote:

It doesn't explain how ignorant Trump is, but it explains why they like him.

Re: Trump
That noise you hear is the mantra of small government falling on it's arse. Religion is a lazy way of avoiding responsibility for planning and management. The religious facade is cynical, evidenced by the number of staright dudes that trip over and inadvertently fall inside a pool boy. Planning is scorned upon and expertise gets pushed aside in favour of the illusion of self made worth wrapped up in a warm jesus blanket. Just the other day a task force was convened to assess allocation of over 200 billion dollars for business stimulus. It was populated mainly by billionaire owners of sports teams, and included the head of the WWE. The real opium of the masses here is the belief that wealth = authority and intelligence and competence. Government has been gradually purged of the ability to support anything but the military and the financial services sector. Anything outside of those demographics is scorned. There is no social safety net for so many people that are kept on or around the poverty line for their entire lives by things like for profit health and absolutely ridiculously low wages and no contracts. As thick, needy, and ignorant as Trump is, he is but a figurehead for a whole swathe of society that clings onto this wealth = expertise sugar high. This has clearly been shown bullshit by this episode.

He's not entirely wrong the WHO need a bit of a kicking, but he's doing it at the wrong time and in piss poor petulant fashion. The Chinese/Wuhan virus naming is in addition to the avoidance of blame is a continuation of his racist overtones.Banquo wrote:He's started with the WHO attack, having laid the groundwork with 'chinese' virus.Digby wrote:It does seem odd to think Trump could screw this up entirely and the simply run an ad campaign with the above noted Christ on a bike and probably recover a shit load of votes.

Re: Trump
I think he is confusing two separate things in his speech, probably because he just rambles so much. At some point someone has told him that we have a problem with antibiotics and their effectiveness and someone has told him of the problems in finding a cure for covid. He’s basically mixing the two things up because he can’t communicate like a normal human being.Son of Mathonwy wrote:That's set back popular US understanding of viruses and bacteria by at least 50 years.Banquo wrote:christ on a bikeDigby wrote:

Exactly. A grown up would have dealt with the situation after the crisis and perhaps invited the WHO Head to Washington for a chat.Digby wrote:He's not entirely wrong the WHO need a bit of a kicking, but he's doing it at the wrong time and in piss poor petulant fashion. By throwing his toys out of the prom, he looks more like a child and makes it difficult for other governments to take issue with the WHO on performance.
But this sort of thing is red meat to the MAGA faithful.

How is it that the footage of him saying these things is consistently even more stupid than you would expect from reading the quote. I’m always half expecting to see he’s been misquoted or done a disservice with the framing of it, but no, he really is that guy.Digby wrote:

I'll be honest, the use of his hands to show antibiotics in a race with the disease and swapping the lead back and forth made me smile. He is entertaining for all he's a horrible human being and utterly incompetent to bootMikey Brown wrote:How is it that the footage of him saying these things is consistently even more stupid than you would expect from reading the quote. “I want to believe” is the reading key. As long as TGPT says something it resounds with them, they discard all other stuff he says.

I did want to slightly want to applaud Kellyanne Conway for noting "This is covid-19 not covid-1 folks, and so you would think the people in charge of the World Health Organization, facts and figures, would be on top of that."
The arrogance in that utter bilge is impressive, albeit disgusting and frankly dangerous

If her statement had any validity, it could equally be applied to America's medical experts.Digby wrote:I did want to slightly want to applaud Kellyanne Conway for noting "This is covid-19 not covid-1 folks, and so you would think the people in charge of the World Health Organization, facts and figures, would be on top of that."

Re: Trump
The whole propaganda machine is in overdrive. After giving an utterly meaningless set of guidelines for relaxing shut down criteria without providing a single medical or epidemiological metric or offering a coordinated resource for managing testing and tracing after things are relaxed, saying it is up to State Governors. He has spent the entirety of his day so far amplifying nut job media conspiracies and falsehoods and engaging in a cowardly promotion of protests by small government weirdos that are in a perpetual deep state delusion that are going on around some parts of the country. This tweet below is particularly pithy as it is aimed at a group of weirdos that are outside the Virginia carrying assault rifles. Public health directives are obviously an insidious attack of the second amendment. I mean, like, totally.
Someone needs to get this person off social media. Only Brazil seems to have a more manifestly stupid response to public health (and by fuck they are about to get bitten by that), but it is probably only the Trumpet's cowardice in face to face confrontation that masks that.

Not consciously but in effect yes. As the NRA does with every tragedy, all logical context is abandoned in favour of the second cunting amendment being front and centre in all dialogue, no matter how irrelevant. Re-election is is primary importance and the sage one feels that hijacking the scientific ignorance of an armed minority an appropriate response to a viral pandemic. They do have some time on their hands I suppose.
