Vigilantism

Can someone remind me about the moral and legal objections to vigilantism. I used to know them but I'm getting on a bit. And are there examples of it becoming codified and brought into the mainstream ? (not in mental countries).
I was reading about the latest success of the paedo' hunters and I'm afraid I stumbled across a Fail article and in the comments someone was suggesting they should be in the honours list and I couldn't think of a good reason why not.
I know it gets ugly and leads to paediatricians getting a brick through their window.

Yup.
But in this circumstance I think there's room for a bit of leeway. From the 3/4 episodes I've seen, this group seems to be getting more savvy about the legal stuff.
Personally I get the feeling that these guys are doing something that the Police would not be able to budget for. They should be doing it,....but they can't afford to.
Entrapment is a bit vague in the UK....?. Not like the US..?. I'm genuinely asking. I don't know.

Current situation in the Philippines (war on drugs) although it probably fails the "mental countries" part.

I would have more sympathy with them if they passed their findings to the Police. Sadly any 'evidence' they uncovered probably couldn't be used but at least it could act as intelligence.
Naming and shaming people in public is highly dangerous and can lead to very unpleasant acts. Even the worst Paedophile deserves a chance to argue their side in court.

& George Zimmerman proved that America hasn't really moved on from that much either.
As for Duterte, he seems like a lunatic, but I wonder if we might look upon it a little differently if he were telling people to go out and kill all the paedophiles. & aren't drug-dealers preying on children just as much - with similar consequences? Food for thought, anyway...

No we wouldn't because we aren't idiots.

I believe the Philippines has become the new world capital of child prostitution, and wouldn't be surprised if the same mafia organizations running the show are also responsible for much of the drug trafficking. So they might be killing two birds with the same stone there. But I'd stop short of advocating vigilantism in any form.

The summary execution without trial of people on the street? Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.

What results would these be?

Basically though, I'm still having difficulty buying that anyone at all is actually advocating vigilantism. Surely I'm missing the sarcasm font?

I was channelling our inner Kent Brockman.
In fairness these guys are doing it by the book now. They're gathering information, creating a trap and passing it all over to the Police at the scene of the meet. As popular justice goes,...these guys are the new Robin Hood.

There is an article in the Times today about the use of summary execution by Duertes backers against his critics and opponents. So easy to blur the lines when effectively you are breaking the law in the first place.

Good article in today's Samoan Observer too:
A former Filipino militiaman testified before the country's Senate on Thursday that President Rodrigo Duterte, when he was still a city mayor, ordered him and other members of a liquidation squad to kill criminals and opponents in gangland-style assaults that left about 1,000 dead.
