Gambia wheels in Barrow !!

Wow
The recent election results in Gambia make Trump's victory over Clinton seem completely mundane. Former security guard and real estate agent Adama Barrow has come from nowhere to oust long-serving president Yahya Jammeh, who has been in power since a military coup 22 years ago and had promised to rule for 'a billion years.' Jammeh had already imprisoned his main rival, Ousainou Darboe, in October for protesting against the government, thereby bringing Barrow into contention, and on the day of the election cut off the internet. Yet Barrow pulled off a major upset by winning with 45.5% of the vote, compared to 36/7% for Jammeh. & The partying continued in the streets all night apparently! This also signals the demise of one of Africa's traditional strongmen. His Excellency Sheikh Professor Doctor President Jammeh liked to flaunt his wealth to his mostly impoverished subjects, appeared frequently on TV, and was also known to practise witchcraft. But he may well have shot himself in the foot by removing Darboe from the equation, as the significantly younger and fitter Barrow seems to have presented a more appealing candidate. Jammeh was no tyrant, improving infrastructure throughout his tenure, avoiding wars, plagues, famine and terrorism, and last year banning female circumcision, however belatedly. He also withdrew Gambia from the Commonwealth and International Criminal Court and removed English as the official language. Nonetheless, he was undeniably guilty of human rights violations, with Gamibians ranking sixth among migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe this year, despite and country's tiny population of just under 2 million. Many would like to see Jammeh brought to trial for the hundreds of dissidents who 'disappeared' during his rule, but it is not yet clear where the military's allegiance would lie should conflict between the new leader and the old arise...

Yes, that was very much on the cards. The big question is, does he still have control of the military ?

Looks like the jig's up - UN rules against Jammeh:
The UN's West Africa envoy says Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh must step down when his mandate ends in January and would be "strongly sanctioned" if he sought to remain in power. Long-ruling Jammeh lost the election to little-known businessman Adama Barrow on December 1 and conceded defeat in a widely celebrated moment of democratic hope for the continent.

Just tell the US that Gambia is an oil rich country and there will be regime change quicker than you can say 'democracy'.
Besides, the US may actually be able to win a war against Gambia.

Things are heating up in Gambia as Jammeh refuses to step down:
“Jammeh is not going to vacate the Presidency without a bloodshed. All indications suggest that he is ready for war. The rebels are here. The endgame for Jammeh is going to be bloody. He has nowhere to go. He wants to commit genocide before the end of his rule. General Saul Badjie distributed the uniforms to the arriving rebels. They are here,” said our source at the State House.

Former long-serving president Yahya Jammeh has been refusing to cede power, of course, and appears to still have control of the army. Meanwhile, the Western Africa regional bloc is on standby. But Nigeria has now formally offered asylum to Jammeh, which might provide a solution to the stand-off. President elect Adama Barrow is scheduled to be sworn in next week, though Jammeh has filed an injunction asking the Supreme Court to block the process. While Gambia is a tiny country of under 2 million inhabitants, this is seen as a test of democracy for the entire continent.

State of Emergency declared by Jammeh in Gambia. This asshole ain't going easily . . .
Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has declared a state of emergency, just two days before he is supposed to cede power after losing elections last month.
In a national TV address, Jammeh said on Tuesday the measure was necessary because of "the unprecedented and extraordinary amount of foreign interference" in a December 1 presidential vote, which he lost to opposition leader Adama Barrow.

Jammeh also cited external interference "the internal affairs of The Gambia and the unwarranted hostile atmosphere threatening the sovereignty, peace, security and stability of the country".
The state of emergency, which is supposed to last 90 days, bans "acts of disobdience" and "acts intended to disturb public order".
A former coup leader who has ruled the small West African country since 1994, Jammeh initially conceded defeat but a week later contested the poll's results stating irregularities.
Barrow, who is currently in Senegal, is scheduled to take office on January 19.
He insists his inauguration will proceed as planned.
"The decision to declare a state of emergency was taken by the national parliament, but the only people who are sitting in parliament are the members of Jammeh's political party," Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque, reporting from neighbouring Senegal's capital, Dakar, said.
Haque said the declaration of the state of emergency raised concerns about freedom of speech and arbitraty arrests in the country, as well as the potential implementation of a curfew and the closure of borders.
"Gambia, as of right now, is effectively on lockdown," Haque said.
"What is clear is that the state of emergency is supposed to last 90 days, which entails that Jammeh wants to stay in power beyond Thursday's inauguration."

Jammeh has been given until midday (ie in a few hours, Gambian time) to step down, or West African troops will move in, which could result in direct confrontation with Gambian troops, should they remain loyal to the former president. Adama Barrow has already been sworn in as Jammeh's successor during a ceremony in Senegal.

Happy Days
Gambia's new president has said that Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the country for 22 years and refused for weeks to step down after losing the recent election, has finally "agreed to leave".
Writing on Twitter on Friday, Adama Barrow said Jammeh would also leave the country.
"I would like to inform you that Yahya Jammeh has agreed to step down. He is scheduled to depart Gambia today. #NewGambia," he tweeted.
