Rugby, a popular sport in the West, tried to settle in Azerbaijan three times, and if today does not provide the athletes with the necessary support, rugby will leave the country forever.

- Rugby came to the USSR in the 30s of the last century, and then it began to play in Azerbaijan. For a short time in the clubs "Spartacus" and "Dynamo" there were teams on rugby. After the Second World War, rugby was branded as a bourgeois sport and banned. The second coming of rugby in the country falls on the 60th years after the International Youth Festival was held in Moscow. But after the collapse of the Soviet Union, interest in rugby fell and it almost did not play. Finally, his third appearance in Azerbaijan was connected with foreigners who worked here. Thanks to them, our youth became interested in rugby, and after a while the Baku Rugby Club appeared.
- Nevertheless, many do not even know the name of this game, not to mention its rules ...
"As they say, one is not a warrior in the field." No matter how we try to bring more information about rugby to the society, without state support, journalists will not be able to achieve the effect. The Azerbaijani team went to the beach rugby tournament at their own expense, and nobody was up to this point. After the team's return, I turned to a number of sports journalists, I wanted to give an interview. But, unfortunately, no one showed interest.
- Did you appeal to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for support?

- This issue can not be addressed by appeal. The Ministry should develop a plan for the development of rugby in Azerbaijan, and we, the federation, for our part should provide support. I note, by the way, that rugby is an Olympic sport.
- But if there are young people in the country who are keen on rugby, why not participate in competitions at their own expense? In other sports there are many athletes who travel to tournaments at their own expense.
- Of course, there is interest. But at the same time, how many promising athletes were forced to leave rugby due to lack of support. Without training, without a normal coach, without an internal championship, we organized a team that took part in an international tournament. And despite all these problems, I was able to defeat more experienced opponents.
If the team will be supported, you can achieve better results. Our athlete Eldar Kerimov organized the "Garabagh" club at his own expense. With the help of sponsors, he drove the team to tournaments, in a short time even good results appeared. But at present, due to the lack of sponsors, the team faces closure.
- So, rugby in Azerbaijan once again crashed?

- Yes, we can say that we are on the road to collapse. But as long as we exist, we will try to keep this game in our country.
- How many people are currently part of the national team? Is there preparation for international competitions?
- You touched on our sick subject. When a national team has games, athletes report it to each other and train whenever possible. And for this you need to find and rent a stadium. It happens that we just find some free space and train.
Game practice, we can say, exists for a couple of players. They study abroad and train in foreign clubs. For example, my son, Tamerlan Aliyev, is studying in Turkey and playing in the team "Sivas Kangals". At the same time in the summer joined the training team from Brooklyn in the United States. The guys who started playing rugby with my son could become wonderful rugby players. If these guys had a little support, a strong team would appear. But, unfortunately, the lack of support led to the fact that young people left the sport.
