Its not an expression that would ever enter my head.
We can all say dumb things, but i'm surprised anyone with a functioning brain would think that this would be acceptable.

Silly thing to say but I’m more worried that he believes the economy to be in that position. Radical thinking required if he’s correct. It’s also a worry that his turn of phrase will garner more attention than his worry about the economy.

In the last 100 years we've had huge growth in the middle classes. It's not obvious where we're going now save some efforts that maintain the status quo

So he chose a word that has very gendered connotations to describe something as "past their peak, and no longer so potent." Yeah, he deserves to be called out on it.

Yeah, poor choice of word, but I still think it's a slight over-exaggeration in the response though.
As Mellsblue said, the turn of phrase is getting more attention than what was meant by it.

If Sarah Smith of Bristol University never thought of ‘the menopause as being ‘not productive’, what the feck does she think it is? It is a natural life process in which biological changes occur in a female signalling (Or causing) a transition to a state of much reduced fecundity. In the purely biological sense, the menopausal woman is no longer productive. Why the feck should anyone have to apologise for using a perfectly sound biological analogy? It is more than PC gone mad; it is an infringement of his right to free speech.
Now, I need to get my rheumatoid investments cashed in before our economy goes spastic and their value drops like grandad’s haemorrhoids!

You see, that was my take on the comment, but the problem is that menopausal women (and other folk) have taken offence at the connotation that women in that stage in life are thought of as no longer of use.
I still think some people are being slightly over-sensitive to the use of an adjective used to describe the state of something not directly related to the adjective...if that makes sense?
Would there be an outcry if he described the economy was barren, sterile, or perhaps limp?

At least he didn't say that the economy was suffering hot flushes, irrational and all pervasive emotional swings, a zealous commitment to make life an absolute sorrow for anyone within a mile of it and growing a mustache.

Hey hey... easy now. You forgot a curiously insatiable libido that would put any 30 year old to shame, and the onset of osteoperosis increasing the likelihood of suffering a broken hip while making use of the above mentioned hormonal burst. God is a practical joker.
What's next? False teeth and a walker?

Ah Coco. You are a gem.
