Avoiding serious head injuries after all these years in rugby and then going into MMA at his age seems like a really bad move. Bellator has some serious heavy weights he could completely wreck himself for peanuts financially.

When they say mixed martial arts, is that like mixed doubles in tennis?

No, it means mixed-up thinking.

It's basically as close to a real fight as you can legally sanction. Grappling and striking with small gloves that protect your hands only.

Though I haven't watched in many years, I did actually watch that fight live on the TV. Jaw absolutely dropped when he did that. 5th round of an enormous championship fight, had been really close the whole time, last fight that organiser ever had (they had been bought by UFC), and in the last minute, Pettis does that. Basically won him the fight, since it gave him the fifth round.
It's not often that something quite so breathtaking happens, or many fighters that can do that. 2 others I remember are Anderson Silva vs someone, when he was basically like Neo off the matrix, and Jon Jones vs Shogun Rua. Always used to be a lot of respect between the fighters when I watched, though as I drifted out, it seemed to be going out the window, and heading more the direction of boxing with all the shit talking etc.

Whereas my knowledge of MMA sits more at the level where for a long time when seeing an MMA event I'd think that fella Bellator has a lot of fights

He'll have one fight, severely aggravate an old injury, and have to retire from that too

Sound like he is applying some caution:
Haskell admits the coaches at Shootfighters have "already started flogging me" but stresses he won't be doing "spinning back kicks or axe kicks if I can't do it".
