Mentioned this as a possibility on another thread, but I have managed to find my DVDs now so thought I'd make a thread for it. I am thinking about live streaming the Autumn Internationals from 2002 - the best England side ever playing New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. We could do one a week and have a match thread on here.

Who would be interested? And are there any days which would be preferable (would have to start at 7.30pm for me due to small children)?

All days are the same at Casa Mellsblue. The only scheduling clash here would be the weekly ‘pub quiz’ at 8.30 on Saturday with school friends.

Similar here, got pub quizes going on Fri and Sat nights. Any other night though. One a week sounds ideal, 7 day build up

Someone could post the team a couple of days before and we could all argue about what a thumping they’re going to get.

I actually planned on doing that! Well, the team bit, not the arguing about the thumping.

I remember being nervously optimistic at the time (back on the old old old Planet Rugby messageboard, where there was no such thing as a login and I got into the habit I've never lost of signing my posts) against all the Kiwis who thought it was adorable that we thought some of our players might be the equal of theirs, let alone better.

Shall we say this Sunday at 7.30pm for the first one? I was planning on using Discord to stream them, unless anyone's got a better suggestion.

I can summarise in advance, we open with a narrow win against the NZ 2nds and shake our heads thinking blimey they don't even normally pick that Holah fella, we beat what I seem to recall was a strong Aussie side on paper with the Aussies getting a few bounces of the ball and Flatley getting a great return on his actual level of talent, and then we flatten a really bad SA side bar them flattening us off the ball. The opening two games were clearly the more important, and whilst both seemed a missed opportunity to win by bigger margins were perhaps crucial to that side being a knowledge and confidence around closing out tight games under pressure

BTW, this is all new to me. I was in a rugby "hiatus" between around 1999 and 2003. I was of the belief I was a football fan. Something of a rebellion against how crap I was at rugby. So I didn't really watch these games the first time round.

It's a shame as I do have a very distinct early memory of being at Twickenham to see England NZ. And looking at the matches, that could only have been 1993. Would have been good if I'd kept it up throughout the years I could actually go to matches.

It really was an incredible time to be a rugby fan. I started watching in 1995 (Five Nations) and the impression that was around was that England were in the upper echelons of world rugby. There were no rankings or annual meetings with the Southern Hemisphere back then, so it was hard to compare - of course New Zealand fancied themselves as good, but we beat Wales often enough and we'd got to the final (where we were robbed) in 1991, so really we were as good as anyone. Then the 1995 semi-final happened and it was made abundantly clear that, no, we were not as good as anyone.

Thus followed a period of 5 years where we played the 3N teams 15 times and won just once (and that a scrappy affair against an understrength South Africa at Twickenham). We did pretty well against all other nations (16/21) in the 5/6N in the same period, which just reinforced that those three were just on another plane. I mean, France could occasionally pull out a one-off result cause they were the French, but for a British nation to do so? It is to laugh! And to make it worse, they had an annoying habit of pulling victory from the jaws of defeat, so we had two types of result - either an abject cuffing, or a game where we looked like we'd finally cracked it, only to fall away at the end.

2000 was a banner year in that we finally beat both South Africa and Australia (the former twice!) and then we followed up the dose in 2001 with another two wins.

However, according to the SH fans, pundits, and newspapers, those had been under-par, under-strength sides. We'd had a string of lucky results against rebuilding sides and it was the same old story again - arrogant England, flat track bullies, over confident from kicking around the Celts, suddenly thought they were world-beaters and their players were anywhere near those of the Southern Hemisphere. Ridiculous.

Anyway, the last time we'd played all three 3N in the same international window, it was the Tour of Hell where we'd set new records for losses. The RFU scheduling all three was nothing but hubris and we would soon be put in our place.

So, the series of events goes that I couldn't find the DVD of the NZ game and it appears that it may have vanished when I last moved house as it's not in the box with the others. However, luckily it was on youtube, so I opened the tab and planned to save the video to my computer today. Just tried to do it and, not only is the video removed, but so is the entire channel so I can't get it back. Apparently it's been there two years, but decided to delete it today. Even better, there's no record of it on the Wayback Machine cause apparently only geeks watch an entire match from 18 years ago so it never saved it. And it doesn't appear that you can buy the footage or a DVD anywhere anymore.

Long story short, I can't deliver the first international in full. I have got an extended highlights video, which is 36 minutes long and is pretty comprehensive, but I understand if you all want to lynch me now. Unless someone else happens to have the DVD or it's put back up on youtube in the next few days, I'm afraid that'll have to do.

I have located the DVDs for Australia and South Africa though, so I can definitely deliver on those.

I do have the Top of the World one. Stom has said he'll help me get access to others as well, so depending on how long the lack of rugby goes on, we could potentially do the 2003 6N and then the summer tour as well!
