Two great long range winger's tries scored at the weekend. For Falcons, Radwan scorched down the right wing in a narrow channel, leaving all in his wake. Gloucester's LRZ ran diagonally across the pitch from deep right to the left corner flag, but did not shake off his pursuer with the ease expected, and was tackled in the act of scoring. Purely subjectively, Radwan looked a tad faster to me (but I'm sure we will hear something about LRZ's boots falling off his feet).
Arundel looked no slouch as well in his hack and chase for LI.

If various completely unofficial metres per second speeds thrown about are true then Radwan is the quickest player in the league (or at least out of those named above). Some random claims below. Disclaimer - Will be loads missing and others not current etc

Observationally I think it's between Radwan, LRZ and Arundell. Would like to see a footrace between the three. Suspect LRZ has the best cruising speed the other two might have slightly better accel. LRZ had a loose boot by all accounts and got clipped as he ran, didn't see where the chase started from but he was already running just as LRZ got the ball from a more or less standing start (longitudinally) so i wouldn't read much into the fact that he was caught - he also slowed significantly when he knew he would score.

The 3 mentioned plus Arron Reed and Ollie Sleightholme would be the fastest players in the league from my eye test.

I don't know he did slow significantly - he only just made it even with going right the way to the corner! If that line had been 2m further out, he'd've been tackled into touch.

Having said that, it's not a fair comparison, as Crossdale wasn't hampered by having a ball and so could pump his arms in a more efficient sprinting motion. Still an impressive feather in Crossdale's cap though.

A lot of them will presumably be GPS readouts from training, so probably not in most cases.

Cole’s charge down was a result of gazelle like footwork across the Devon turf

LRZ certainly didn't slow he knew he was being chased down. He had a lead on Crossdale and needed it. As Puja says though running with the ball definitely slows you down. Kudos to Crossdale for putting the effort in, most would just right it off as the rapid LRZ scoring a certain try. At the least he made the conversion a challenge.

p/d you're quite right the deceptively rapid Dan Cole's chargedown was exceptional.

A lot of them will presumably be mostly invented figures by players, so probably not in most cases.

Rory Underwood was said to be faster with the ball than without, possibly an urban myth. But obviously an alleged exception to an obvious rule.

That does sound like an urban myth. It could just be that he tried his hardest when actually playing. If you are just doing some pre season sprinting you possibly hold a little bit back because it's not that important.


They should introduce this to rugby before the prem finals.

He certainly did slow - if only his last 4 strides or so. You can see it from all angles as he glides to the line. I was actually concerned in real time watching it that the slowing would mean he wouldn't make it. but he was clearly confident. Crossdales speed impressed me, as I mentioned though he did have a 'flying' start. Ball in hand is a valid point all round.

OK. I've watched it back a few times now, Crossdale is already turned and ahead of LRZ before LRZ has passed him, you are right however, it is no flying start. The Left wing who's name escapes me is the one who gets the flying start but Crossdale is way quicker than him and eats up around 5 yards on him in the centre of the park. LRZ actually runs a longer path as he swerves right before heading to the left corner, Crossdale runs a straight line which helps him catch up. I will change my initial statement then to include Crossdale in the 4 strong footrace. I don't think he is as fast as LRZ though.

Yeah there’s a million variables in all of these situations. I’d think Crossdale and Sleightholme are up there with May, Radwan etc. but I really can’t imagine anyone matching LRZ over 40+.
