Best Split Enz album?
I'm stuck between Dizrythmia and Waiata (released as Corroboree in Aust)

Dizrhythmia is excellent. Waiata's sort of a True Colours lite IMO. Good, but not scaling the heights of True Colours or Time & Tide, which would be my faves from the post-1980 more poppy albums.

I revisited TC and T&T at work yesterday.
I now have an irresistible urge to compile a greatest hits Spotify playlist.

The word 'best' implies that there were some good ones.
There weren't.
Talentless, whining, art school wimps who rode on the back of some really good kiwi bands making names for themselves at the time. And souring the ground for them.
The Finn brothers are worthy only of contempt. I saw Split Enz once and they were pretty much booed off stage because they were crap.
And we won't even get into the crime against music that Crowded House were.

Hello killjoy.
I saw Split Enz once and they were bloody brilliant.
I'd be interested to know whose back you thought they rode.
I once came back from the bar at the Kings Arms to find my then girlfriend, now wife, talking to Neil Finn. She chose to introduce me by explaining to him that I preferred Split Enz to Crowded House.

Not sure about Split Enz piggy backing off anyone. Their early stuff was unusual. Art school, as you say.
When did you see them live? I believe they had some rough gigs in Australia in the 1970s. Pub crowds wanting Cold Chisel esque rock, and getting a bunch of Kiwi weirdos with silly hair and funny costumes. An unsuitable mixture.

I'm waiting for UG to tell me that the Enz were responsible for Proud Scum not being able to break into Aussie or something.

Going back not quite as far I loved the "Dunedin scene". The chills. The bats (ok Christchurch). Look blue go purple. I introduce Canadians to NZ 80s "alternative" to this day. Would love to hear some new NZ sounds if you guys have something to recommend.

Dizrythmia for me.
UG you fucking bitch.
Dunedin has a soft spot for me too JD (or is that the other way around?). Clean, Double Happys, Tall Dwarfs etc are still pissed staples.
What's the state of NZ hip hop? I remember some vicarious living kicked off by Rappers Delight in south Auckland (as it kicked off everywhere), going to movies like Beat Street, then Patea Maori Club (I remember when they came to Papatoetoe high and lifted the fukin roof), followed up with some Upper Hut Posse and suchlike, but then....?

1979 was a vintage year for New Zealand pop music. Remember these?

Yeah I was at one of them. It was kind of funny really watching Tim Finn dodging cans.
But it definitely wasn't a Cold Chisel type crowd. I hated them almost as much as I hate the Finn brothers.
Might have been supporting the Oils back in Head Injuries days.

Th' Dudes Bliss summed up NZ for me(well it did in 91 the first time I went there and spent a lot of time in dodgy boozers in Northland), there's been some bloody good stuff over the years along with some truly dire shite.
