Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
All this mamby-pamby nanny-bollocks about Fixed Odds Betting Terminals! I see that DCMS wants to reduce the maximum stake on a single spin to £2! This will merely add to the time it takes these pathetic nob-munchers to deliver themselves into ruination.
Increase the maximum stake on a single spin to £20,000 and get the feckers through the pawn shop and off the streets before I go for morning coffee, I say.

Just the Neo Ottoman delusions I'm talking about. To be fair, I think most Turks are a bit too wise and worldly for that, but they're not the ones controlling the local mainstream media right now.SerjeantWildgoose wrote:Ah c'mon Rowan! ... but these guys are acting like the empire is back right now. The traditional Ottoman military band has been dusted off and rolled out to perform, & the zealots are out in their droves making fatih prayers for a victorious conquest (also common practice in Ottoman times). Meanwhile our glorious leader is making thunderous speeches to euphoric applause on live television several times a day; the same glorious leader who was making thunderous speeches the day I arrived here more than 12 years ago. He's already reigned for longer than many sultans.

Apropos of not very much, the Turkish Deputy PM is an ethnic Kurd and dual citizen, holding a British passport in addition to his Turkish one. I’m pretty sure, as a consequence, that it was he who came up with the name of “Operation Olive Branch”.

That’s attempting to sound like a lawyer? Is there a more concise, layman’s word that does the same job?

Warning, caution, red flag, etc, etc
A frivolous defense if ever there was one, Mikey. The prosecution rests its case.

If those are synonyms that contain all the same meaning then I clearly haven’t got a clue what the word caveat even means.rowan wrote:Warning, caution, red flag, etc, etc

A caveat is neither a warning nor a caution; it is a condition - or a codicil if you prefer.
Mike is right, and Rowan - as is so frequently the case - is talking through his jock-strap.

Isn’t the “of specific stipulations” part the key bit though?
I’m struggling to think it would be less annoying if people started saying “a warning in regard to specific stipulations” each time.

I didn't realise caveats were back in fashion. Do you colour co-ordinate them with your top or your trousers?

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
The key thing is, as Mike points out, the matter of specific stipulations (The only credible source Rowan has quoted is the Oxford). It is not enough to state that caveat means a caution or a warning and least of all a 'red-flag'; it serves as notice that any given statement is conditional upon other stipulated conditions or factors.
An example might be, "Rowan thinks himself to be a bastion of knowledge, but I would attach a caveat to this statement by saying that he is entirely alone in this presumption."

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Isn't "caveat" simple Latin, rather than legalese?
And has it ever not been I use amongst the general population? Our language is, after, evolved from Latin in large parts.
As for meaning "warning" or "caution" - well, maybe, if you squint, and turn your head sideways; but there's significantly more to it.
"Red flag" on the other hand is military and medical specific term (and maybe other specific professions) - albeit with its roots in medieval sailing/semaphore. Surely it's creeping into popular use from shows like ER, Casualty or House, along with "stat" - if indeed it IS creeping I to popular usage.

It depends whether you are using it to look like a faded 70s Top of the Pops-paedophile or to hold up your flares.OptimisticJock wrote:I didn't realise caveats were back in fashion. Do you colour co-ordinate them with your top or your trousers?

That must be why people break into the song: "We'll keep the Red Flag flying here.." every time Jeremy Corbyn hoves into view aboard the good ship Abbott.Which Tyler wrote:Isn't "caveat" simple Latin, rather than legalese?

I would attach a caveat to SoG's above statement, by adding that any passenger aboard the good ship Abbott is far more likely to flounder than to hove.

Caveat is used frequently in the sciences. As is "that is fucking bullshit" and "do you still have that recipe for ecstasy"

MDMA is a great metaphor for caveat.
It makes you feel great, in love with and loved by everyone around you and in possession of dance moves the envy of the rave-going world - all of which must be caveated by the reality that you are dangerously dehydrated, making an utter twat of yourself to anyone within arms distance and look like a complete spastic.
