Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Iki tane cok soguk kola istiyorum, lutfen.
Turkish is a tough language and took me more than twice as long to learn as Spanish and French combined. I'm not much good at speaking French though, because I never lived there and am hopeless at both the accent and making the right facial expressions, which tends to baffle most French people. I'm still strongest in Spanish, my first foreign language.
Spanish isn't Latin now is it?
It's one of the few languages that is derived directly from Latin, in fact. These are known as the Romance languages, of course.
Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, and Catalan are the official languages of the Latin Union https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages

The famous Kuskoy Whistling Language of the eastern Black Sea region, you mean? No, that's about as far from Istanbul as you can get without leaving the country. Besides, it's been on the decline since mobile phones arrived. The only whistling in Istanbul is when a pretty girl walks by . . .

I learned a lot of Russian vocab during the few months I spent in St Petersburg, because I worked at it, though about all I retained afterward was privyet, dasvidanya and spaseeba bolshoy! So when I went to China for a few months I didn't even make the effort, and got by the whole time on Nihau, xi and xi xi

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Door bells It is not unusual for ours to be rung (repeatedly) at one or two in the morning, invariably by people visiting residents on other floors or fast food delivery guys who've been given the wrong door number. Surely fast food deliveries shouldn't be happening at that time of night. & if they do, they ought to be using mobile phone numbers these days rather than randomly ring door bells at one or two in the morning. Same applies to idiots who visit their their friends at that time.

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Gee whiz, man, bought a new computer today and it's been loading for about 7 hours while I'm having to use one of old ones (fortunately I have a selection). But why don't they do this loading up business in the store before they sell the things?
That's my gripe for the day. Thank you for your attention.

Ok, so I'm back on my new computer now, feeling a little less aggrieved but still trying to work out how to get all the settings in order.

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
...and what about those fecking rotary style toasters that the chain hotels are now sticking in the fecking breakfast room? They're invariably set on the lowest setting which means it takes about 5 or 6 laps - or 20 minutes - to turn bread into toast
... and they have put governors on the fecking dials to stop you adjusting the thing to any level that gives you more than just barely warm bread.
And they leave a handy set of metal tongs beside it, which are supposed to reduce the handling of the bread, but I suspect are really there to allow you to do yourself in by jamming them into the element when the wait for toast becomes too much to bear.
Cunts!

...not to the mention the egg boilers that have in French hotel breakfast rooms. You put your egg in a wee basket, stick it in the water in a convenient place, set the timer to 6 minutes for a medium soft egg, and hey presto - 6 minutes later you have a raw, slightly warmed egg.

I am now at the stage where my kok is about as fragile as a water biscuit; no chance of getting it buttered with them pats of concrete that they serve up in Hotel breakfasts!morepork wrote:Buttered husbands?
