Summer Tour Squad...

Post by MrK »

..who would you like to see

For me.

Evans, W Jones, Smith
Dee, Elias, Dacey (rest Owens)
Lee, Lewis, Brown
Ball, Hill, S Davies, B Davies (rest AWJ)
Griffiths, Shingler, Jenkins, Navidi, Faletau (Capt) (Rest Moriaty, Rest Tips doing the commonwealth thing)

Davies, T WIlliams, Davies
Patchell, Anscombe
O Williams, H Parkes, O Watkins, S Williams (assume JD2 will still be out - if not, swap for S WIlliams)
Adams, Evans, Amos (even though hes doing the commonwealth too), L Williams, G North (rest 1/2p)

A chance to play the less established players more would be by goal

I think Leon Brown is out for three months, not sure when the tour dates are but it could be a bit soon for him, with him having missed the majority of this season with injuries I'd rather he was given the time off to get himself right. Amos can't be used as he will be at the commonwealth games as you say, so maybe a chance to see what Hewitt can do if he's fit or maybe Keelan Giles.

As a basic principle, anyone who toured with the Lions (other than the infamous 6 who didn’t play) doesn’t tour. Add to that anyone who is injured and needs a proper pre season.

The rest can show what they can do.

So we think no Faletau and no North or Williams either?

With no Amos, 1/2P or L Williams - FB is going to be interesting - maybe Patchell/Anscombe? then at FB

Revised squad ?

Evans, W Jones, Smith
Dee, Elias, Dacey
Lee, Lewis, Francis (if Brown is recouperating)
Ball, Hill (Capt ?), S Davies, B Davies
Griffiths, Shingler, Jenkins, Navidi, Young/ Davies

Davies, T WIlliams, Davies
Patchell, Anscombe, Priestland
O Williams, H Parkes, O Watkins, S Williams (assume JD2 will still be out - if not, swap for S WIlliams)
Adams, Evans, Lane?, Cuthbert?

How does that look?

Looks tidy enough to me, I think I'd be inclined to play Navidi at 8 or Ollie Griffiths, Tomos Williams looked lively when he came on for the Blues last Friday, I'd like to see him get more game time as he seems to be a decent size but also very mobile.

The Commonwealth games end on 15th April (yeah, I didn't believe that either), so shouldn't keep anyone from touring this Summer.

Yeah, agreed - O Griffiths looks to have it all

Id like to see E Jenkins show what hes got too, he just looks a classy player.

On the basis that Amos will be available, Id replace Cuthbert in the squad with Amos

Even though he was selected for the Lions I'm sure Moriarty will be available to tour, he's hardly played this season so far so the last thing he needs is more rest. He's probably desperate to get his Wales shirt back.
Also talk Warburton could be fit to tour, not sure how feasible that is given his prolonged absence this season but we'll see.

Moriarty probably could do with a run out. E Jenkins and O Griffiths are both worth a look, and of course there is Shingler and Navidi so there is a fair bit of competition for the back row without putting pressure on injured players.

Id rather Warburton had a pre-season. His injury list is terrible - perhaps a good preseason would do him good.

It would be nice to see Sam Davies or Dan Jones get a call up. Also, Hewitt and/or Giles (if fit).

Agreed, maybe Owen Lane in the centre which is apparently his favoured position.

Just how well has Jarrod Evans been playing for the Blues !

Last couple of games Ive seen him play he has been excellent, and against Ulster on the weekend he was outstanding.

Great to see strength in depth at 10 at the Regions and for Wales - Anscombe/Evans, Patchell/Jones, Biggar/S Davies (although admittedly Biggar is leaving)

Hope he continues to play like this and gets the Blues into Europe.

Agree re: Jarrrod Evans, he looks like the form 10 in Wales at the moment, he also looks pretty solid for his size, it'll be interesting to see if he keeps his place when Anscombe is back or whther they will use Anscombe at 15 again.

So..
Amos, Prydie,
North, Evans, Adams
Watkins, Parkes, Williams
Anscombe, Patchell
G Davies, A Davies, T Williams
Evans, Smith, W Jones,
Dee, Elias
Lee, Francis, Lewis
Hill, B Davies, S Davies, Beard, CLart
Shingler, Navidi, Jenkins, Davies, Moriaty

Given theres 3 games and everyone will get game time (supposedly) who'd you play when?

Prydie is a bolter isn't he, decent enough player but someone like Dan Evans would offer so much more.
There you are, if your face doesn't fit with Gats & Co you have no chance.
Jarrod is the biggest absentee for me, head and shoulders the best 10 in the country over the last few months. They could easily have accommodated him with Anscombe or Patch covering 15 too.
Missed opportunity.

Agree on Jarrod.

I also agree with the WOL 15 to play SA

Amos, North, Williams, Parks, Evans, Patchell, G Davies
Evans, Dee, Lee, Hill, B Davies, Shingler, Navidi, Moriaty
My Bench : Elias, Jones, Francis, S Davies, Jenkins, T Williams, G Anscombe, J Adams

I think you need the back row for SA.

That means for the other 2 games Id go

Amos, Adams, Williams, Watkins, Evans, Anscombe, T Williams (id like to see this pairing at 9/10 even though A Davies may be "2nd 9")
Evans, Dee, Lee, S Davies, B Davies, Shingler, Jenkins, Navidi (keep same front row for first Argie game)
B: Smith, Elias, Lewis, L Charteris, Moriaty, A Davies, Patchell, North

Last Game
Anscombe, Prydie, North, Parkes, Adams, Patchell, A Davies - Id like to see Anscombe FB/Patchell 10 again - Prydie will need a game - Lets get this North at 13 experiment hes suggested in this game...
Jones, Elias, Francis, Hill, Beard, Jenkins, Davies, Moriaty - Cubby will finally get a run out
B: Smith, Dee, Lewis, Charteris, Navidi, G Davies, Watkins, H Amos,

Will be interesting to see how this goes. None of the matches will be easy with this semi-development squad, but we do at least have Gatland rather than McBryde steering the ship. Nice to see Charteris back, but why then was he missing from the 6N?

We could easily lose all 3 games, but if we are competitive and have some good erformamces then I won’t be too upset. It would be nice to build momentum before a RWC, it senior players need a rest and it’s an opportunity for reserves to stake a claim.

And actually, those players are in form so they deserve a chance.

We should, and I think will, win all three, that squad is plenty strong enough, if they can start well against SA then I think that will be the impetus we need.

The Bokke have improved a lot, so a loss wouldn’t surprise me.

So Charteris, Adams and Francis are out due to the SA test falling outside the International window, they have ben replaced with Ashton Hewitt, Aaron Wainwright and Rhodri Jones. So it looks as though Rhodri Jones is being used as a backup tighthead again, I can only assume that Leon Brown is still out of action but this is far from ideal against two strong scrummaging teams.

Glad to see Hewitt tho, he is one of our few wingers with genuine pace.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how Hewitt goes. The others weaken us though... not good news.

I'm assuming that Ollie Griffiths is still injured as surely he would be ahead of Wainwright in the pecking order.

They really need to leave Rhodri Jones alone at loose head. We could have a very good prop there, instead of a mediocre tight head.
