I think Edinburgh are a slightly better team than they have been but not by much. Top six is out the window now and I think that is fair enough

Thankfully doesn't fit the 2016/17 plan of youth and/or SQ.Big D wrote:LS could sign Strausssharvey44 wrote:Cuthbert has been announced as joining Jersey..Big D wrote:Cuthbert and Te Rue are confirmed as off.![]()

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Embra departures: Dougie Fife, Andries Strauss, Alex Toolis, Jack Cuthbert, Otulea Katoa, Nick McLennan, Jade Te Rure, plus prop Grant Shiells
Looks like a sensible clearout of the dead wood although they'll need to fill the squad back up again. The Embra first team gets flogged remorselessly during the season - so perhaps no surprise that they tail off in the last third. Compare with Glasgow with much greater squad depth and ability, and ability to rotate - no accident that they usually peak in the last third of the season.

Would have kept Fife and Toolis. I wonder if the former is going full time with the 7s?

Fife should have concentrated on centre much earlier in his career, has always been more effective there. Not surprised to see him moving on.
No surprises with the rest leaving. Would liked to have kept Toolis and disappointed that Shiells never showed the potential that we thought he had.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Says a lot about the quality of players Edinburgh have and develop when they can only go to Championship clubs & low level prem teams.
At least they're trying to fix it.
Looks like that's one less option at lock for Scotland as Toolis is apparently returning to Australia.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Have to agree on Fife - I've just never seen it with him. But then I don't watch every Embra game so perhaps I've missed his better performances.
Scottish players sometimes get a mulligan when it comes to objective review of their ability. I get it, as we have so few pro players and we want them to be good - but sometimes this level is beyond them. But at the same time precisely because of our shallow player pool we have to take on view on whether they can be Test quality. If they can't and are clogging up a spot then it's time to move on.

I don't think Fife is that bad. Wouldn't have him as first choice mind.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
I dont particularly rate him but that is clearly nonsense. Had a good try scoring record for a while in a poor team. Just lacks a bit of x factorhugh_woatmeigh wrote:Fife is a waste of space, why would you keep him?OptimisticJock wrote:Would have kept Fife and Toolis. Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Shame Toolis is going, I think Edinburgh have done a reasonable job developing twin 1 and twin 2. Wouldn't surprise me if he continues to improve at the Rebels (if that is where he is going). It will be the 1st time (I think) the twins will be playing at different clubs so far apart (the loan at Glasgow doesn't count) so hopefully it doesn't impact Ben at all. Twins are funny things.
Fife going isn't necessarily a problem, but Edinburgh need more back 3 cover. Although liked by some Ulster fans I am not overly convinced Scholes will be a) a massive success, b) here for much longer than 2 years if he is and c) if he is that good Ulster wouldn't have let him go.
I am assuming Howarth and Robbins will start to see game time next season but think 1 more will probably be needed as I think Hoyland should be knocking on the door of international selection.

Scottish wings are in short supply at the moment. If his head is in the right place Edinburgh should be talking to Maitland. A back three of Maitland, Bryce and Hoyland with Brown and Kinghorn backing up looks very promising and very Scottish

Nick Beavon signs.

Nice 'feel good' story with a guy his age signing for a pro team.

I know nothing about him but if he is there on merit no complaints. Lets not forget that Houston was one of Edinburgh's best players at the time and got his first pro contract at 24/25.Chunks Baws wrote:Nick Beavon signs.

Re Scholes. What do you mean by "that good"? Is he currently better than Trimble or Bowe? No, but then I'm not sure I'd take any wings in the British Isles ahead of them. Then you've got Piutau arriving who can play at wing as well and various other full backs knocking about. He's probably in a similar place to Tommy Seymour when he moved. He's worthy of a first team place, just not with us. As for being around for more than 2 years, given where Edinburgh are, I wouldn't worry about that too much at the moment. If he goes well and Edinburgh are going well then he may well want to stay. if not, you probably wouldn't want to keep him.Big D wrote:Shame Toolis is going, I think Edinburgh have done a reasonable job developing twin 1 and twin 2.
