Be careful where you go for news, apparently the fuckheads livestreamed it, and several news outlets are playing that livestream on loop, or as autoplay videos

It's a disgusting act, though I confess a small part of my reaction was 'hah' and whilst that isn't helpful and perhaps doesn't speak well to my character I doubt I'd be the only one.

Mirth stemming from schadenfreude and other unpleasant character traitsMellsblue wrote:Yeah. Indeed, I make no claim to being a nice person. Nonetheless I find I'm very intolerant toward organised religion with it's focus on segregation, misogyny, homophobia, patriarchal structures, righteousness of the true believers and so on, it gets worse for monotheistic religions and worse again for Islam.

That might be valid if this news had been about an attempt to counter any of those things you mentioned. I’m not remotely a fan of organised religion. I just can’t see how this could be viewed as anything productive in the fight against it.

Probably best not to give the cunt any more attention.Mikey Brown wrote:That might be valid if this news had been about an attempt to counter any of those things you mentioned. Just to add I’ve only just seen this story. I don’t know how much is known about the gunman. Is the likelihood of him being a right-wing ‘Christian’ fanatic an unfair assumption by me? Or is that the schadenfreude you refer to, that the extremes of all these groups are largely the same?

I don’t know. Maybe I’m not understanding what he meant. I doubt I’ll agree but I’m curious why someone would feel that way.OptimisticJock wrote:Probably best not to give the cunt any more attention.Mikey Brown wrote:That might be valid if this news had been about an attempt to counter any of those things you mentioned. I’ve typed a couple of responses but neither of them conveyed my thoughts very well as I struggle to wrap my head around the thought process that leads to ‘hah’ being your response to innocent people being murdered.

So, you demand more tolerance from others whilst being incredibly intolerant yourself. Brilliant.Digby wrote:Indeed, I make no claim to being a nice person. I would have responded more quickly but was checking on friends and family who live and work near the two mosques.

I'm aware I live following that old line that if there's one thing I can't stand it's intolerance. It's a failing for sure, again I suspect I'm not aloneMellsblue wrote:So, you demand more tolerance from others whilst being incredibly intolerant yourself. Got to say, Digby, even I thought that was a bit too far off the moral piste.

What, responding in part to horrible situations with gallows humour or simply unacceptable humour? I'd reiterate again it was a disgusting act, but it's just not going to be the case that 100% of the response from 100% of the people is entirely informed by compassion and virtue.Which Tyler wrote:Now that, is fucking terrible!Digby wrote:It's a disgusting act, though I confess a small part of my reaction was 'hah' and whilst that isn't helpful and perhaps doesn't speak well to my character I doubt I'd be the only one.
Another example from this week, I laughed when the news came out that the orange shitgibbon closing down so much government contributed to the lack of action on Boeing planes that might inform the also horrible loss of life on the Ethiopian plane

So almost 200 (400 if incl lion air) people die because America reduces airline safety budget, and your reaction is to laugh? What's wrong with you??Digby wrote:Another example from this week, I laughed when the news came out that the orange shitgibbon closing down so much government contributed to the lack of action on Boeing planes that might inform the also horrible loss of life on the Ethiopian planeWhich Tyler wrote:Now that, is fucking terrible!Digby wrote:It's a disgusting act, though I confess a small part of my reaction was 'hah' and whilst that isn't helpful and perhaps doesn't speak well to my character I doubt I'd be the only one.
