No Anderson or Bairstow in test side. Roy understandably left out. Suspect he will go play the big bash.

Interesting. Surprises there in the Lancashire pair and Crawley.

Could mean a spot in the XI for both Sibley and Pope, though. At least one of them, which is good.

Some good calls - Buttler with the gloves
( Bairstow had a great opportunity there ), Pope, Sibley.
T20: Morgan back, both Currans and exciting young talent Banton & Brown in the mix.

Is this au revoir for Jimmy, or is he being saved for SA?

Ed Smith has said he is not rested.

Not quite recovered from the calf injury. Which makes the 1st test inclusion all the more baffling.

Trescothick plays his final first class match this weekend. What a career. Probably my favourite batsman and the last player (I think) from that Ashes series to retire. It might just be me but it’s one of those sporting retirements that marks the end of a special/iconic sporting team/occasion.

Although injured, I think Ian Bell is still going?

His contribution to that series was easily forgotten. A couple of decent 50's IIRC but that was it.

I’m also disinclined to to remember a man who was nicknamed the Sherminator amongst the Aussies. That brought shame upon our entire nation

Indeed, though his 'i've been called worse.. ' response to
the Sledgeroo was good form.
5 Ashes-win involvement is some record - though not normally in the headlines at the time.
Classy, correct player albeit frustrating at times in the 1-day versions for club & country, by not chancing his arm a bit when the run-rate was slipping. ( imho).

He'd walk into the current team at his best, and many other teams from other eras.

He would possibly captain this side.

I know it is against a lower standard of opposition but good to see Sibley and Crawley hit tons in the warm up game.

Do well to save this one..even Leitch has a watchman-wobble.
Over 260 for the 7th wicket raises familar qustions about
astute stewardship of his bowling attack.(JR), but also the batsmen's ability to knuckle down and grind out a commanding total.

Fair play to NZ for putting in a huge effort and actually playing some test cricket, not a lot of teams do that

Not sure what this Watling chap is up to hanging around for 473 balls. Doesn’t he know you’re meant to swipe at anything not on middle stump and then play a stupid shot to get yourself out as soon as your strike rate falls below 80. Amateur.

It seems even a dubious BJ is considered better than none at all, given the lead in the polls. :|

Need some heroics now to bat out the last day - Root's back in the hutch already..
