It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Are you suggesting RR applies to be Interim Head Coach by committee?

I wasn't but now you have, I am completely on board with it. Just let me dust off my old 'pod system for dummies' manuals and we're laughing.Mellsblue wrote:Are you suggesting RR applies to be Interim Head Coach by committee?

Imagine the media reaction when Farrell doesn't even make the touring squad.

Geech has named a team: https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/5 ... EFqNIo0Ysw
I think it might be a fun 'jaunt' or whatever it is we call it on RR. I like the look of that squad. I'd probably keep Underhill and would give Ford or Russell a go over Farrell meself.

Geech is normally utterly mental as a pundit with picking teams, but that one's not too bad. Farrell at 10 is a non-starter, obviously, and I'd quibble with Manu at 12 (he's not a 12!), no selection of May on the wing, and picking a superfluous Scot at 6, but apart from that, it's a pretty solid selection.Mr Mwenda wrote:Geech has named a team: https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/5 ... I'm allowing you one in the starting XV and one on the bench (Sutherland and Higg respectively) - what more could you ask for? That's one more than you usually get!Donny osmond wrote:I SEE THE BANTER HAS STARTED ALREADYPuja wrote:

On a serious note, I'd like to posit Sam Johnson as being the best option for 12 in the Isles at the present time. It'd depend on form on tour and how he'll adapt to playing alongside higher quality players than he's used to, but he'd be who I'd pick there tomorrow.

Re: Lions SA 2021
Projecting a bit but I think I'd like to see:
Hogg
Watson
Manu
God knows - anyone who looks semi competent.
May
Ford
Cooney
Sutherland
George
Sinkler
Ryan
Itoje
Underhill
Watson
Navidi
McInally - could be any of the hookers left really.
Mako
Fagerson
Lawes
Billy V
Williams
Farrell
LWilliams
4 Scots is obviously a stretch given no one wants to select them , but I think the ones selected above showed up well in the 6N and have the right qualities to face up to SA.
Plenty of impact off the bench.

In which positions are there genuinely outstanding candidates?
I can only really think of 9 & 10, where I think Murray and Sexton are a step above the rest.
Every other position is wide open I think?

I'd say Itoje and Ryan are the outstanding locks. Lots of competition in that position, but those two are something special to my mind. Plus, you'd have to say George is the standout at hooker.Donny osmond wrote:In which positions are there genuinely outstanding candidates?

And are you serious about Murray and Sexton? Sexton's going to be 73 at the point of the tour and Murray's on the verge of losing his Ireland place. I would've thought Davies had 9 sewn up.

In fairness I wasn't impressed with either of them in the short 6N we just had, but at their best they are still the best of the home nations, I think. Of course, they might be falling off their best at this stage.Puja wrote:I'd say Itoje and Ryan are the outstanding locks. Davies is the best of the rest at 9 but doesn't seem able to cement the Wales shirt?
Had forgotten about George, yeah he prob is the outstanding hooker.

9 stands out for me as the weakest potential position in the squad and the slot where there is scope for a real bolter to make a mark. However I don't really see anyone stepping up unless Alex Mitchell possibly nails down the Northampton shirt with Reinach off to Montpellier.Donny osmond wrote:In fairness I wasn't impressed with either of them in the short 6N we just had, but at their best they are still the best of the home nations, I think. There used to be a nice tradition of an uncapped bolter making the tour. Garland won't take that chance but anyone out there that could make a run over the next season? I'd have picked Doris at 8 before he got his 5 minute debut.

I could very possibly see Gatland picking someone that Eddie disdains, potentially just to be a d*ck. Someone like Dombrandt or Robson or Simmonds (the latter two not uncapped, but bolters nonetheless).switchskier wrote:9 stands out for me as the weakest potential position in the squad and the slot where there is scope for a real bolter to make a mark. Mako is absolute class when fit, but that does seem to be increasingly rare. Mako also seems to be one of those who’s reputation is getting better and better the less he plays.Stom wrote:Look, Sutherland looked good, but are you all seriously leaving the best lhp in the world on the bench? You mad!
Sutherland hasn’t got Mako’s hands, not even Furlong or Sinkler do, but he was smashing people in every contact area and most importantly the scrums. These threads are surely pretty pointless (more so than usual) if we’re going to ignore current form.

Yeah, but you do have to balance current form vs peak form...Mikey Brown wrote:Mako is absolute class when fit, but that does seem to be increasingly rare. I honestly can't really see past an all England front 3, though I would probably have 2 Scots on the bench.
Itoje and Ryan would be something special in the boiler room, but then you'd need to supplement the carrying in the front row...hence the need for those England 3.
The backrow would obviously make use of BillyVs pure excellence when fit and firing. If not, and if Faletau's injury problems are just getting worse, the choices are either not very good or callow.
The flanks are where we have choice, and as I said, with neither locks being particularly amazing carriers, I'd want extra ballast at 6 in Stander, though I'd be open to other suggestions here, he's my least locked in player outside the 12 conundrum and the gaping void at 9.

You are not. My back three would be Williams, Watson, May. In my opinion, Williams is a player of ridiculous quality, especially at full-back, and I wouldn't move him for anyone.Mellsblue wrote:Am I the only one who would have Williams at 15 over Hogg?
