Police seem to be occupying the intersection of "racist" and "stupid".
Also "ignorant of the law".

There’s a report that a protestor was shot dead by some random bloke in a pick up truck.cashead wrote:Some shit is going down.

Utter, utter piece of shit. Fuck this. Just fuck this.
...got too frisky or out of line, they would quickly come down on them, hard - didn’t know what hit them. The front line was replaced with fresh agents, like magic. Big crowd, professionally organized, but nobody came close to breaching the fence. If they had they would
have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen. That’s when people would have been really badly hurt, at least. Many Secret Service agents just waiting for action. “We put the young ones on the front line, sir, they love it, and....
This place is collapsing under the weight of callous incompetence. White fucking trash can occupy a state capitol building armed to the teeth with assault weapons with impunity, but the cops target black folk for any perceived misdemeanour:
"In Louisville, multiple protests had also broken out since Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was shot and killed by police. When narcotics detectives broke down her door after midnight, her boyfriend fired a gun, thinking armed intruders had entered the home. Police shot Taylor eight times when they returned fire. They found no drugs."
They in fact, had the wrong house.
Time to get involved, I think.

SCOTUS, just, came down on the side of law and the logic in rejecting the idea California's lockdown orders are putting an unconstitutional burden on religious lunacy. It was a 5-4 ruling with the Chief Justice siding with the so called liberals on the court.
The court's four other GOP appointees, Chief Justice Roberts apart, dissented, with three of them signing up to an opinion written by Kavanaugh, which by any fair definition is not only barking mad but basically ignores both the law and the question that was asked of the court. It doesn't really seem like it should be possible the ruling was so close, and it certainly doesn't seem cool that Kavanaugh and company can just go full retard because of the politics. No word on why one of the dissenting judges wouldn't sign up to Kavanaugh's opinion, probably he couldn't bring himself to be quite that shameful, and he didn't want the dressing down the Chief Justice handed to Kavanaugh in basically calling Kavanaugh a rancid liar.

I think I heard the whole thing is largely a waste of time with some changes to make gatherings voluntary as to size? But yep, it's full on banana republic time just looking at the behaviour of 3-4 of the judgesmorepork wrote:Digby wrote:SCOTUS, just, came down on the side of law and the logic in rejecting the idea California's lockdown orders are putting an unconstitutional burden on religious lunacy. Jesus fuck America
Police going to a peaceful aid station, stealing the water and smashing the milk, then riot geared officers advancing on the people who paid for it with batons because they were filming them nicking the aid supplies.
Oh, and the mayor then leaping into the fray by claiming the bottles of white milk-looking liquid that's clearly milk that were smashed were actually molotov cocktails filled with petrol. Outstanding.

It's hardly wanton destruction of property, but it is destruction of property, and if you're going to be amused by destruction of property it's a bit weird to decry the loss of some bottles of milk.Puja wrote:cashead wrote:

Milk is the easiest way to mitigate the damage of tear gas. Given the police have been summarily gassing peaceful protesters all across the country (including children in Seattle, I hear), yes, I am decrying them actively destroying an aid station that was there to help people who had been hurt.Digby wrote:It's hardly wanton destruction of property, but it is destruction of property, and if you're going to be amused by destruction of property it's a bit weird to decry the loss of some bottles of milk.Puja wrote:cashead wrote:

A note, tear gas is banned in warfare by international treaty. It's a chemical weapon. US police are currently spraying it indiscriminately over crowds.

Re: America
Given the scale of the rioting most police forces in the world would be using tear gas to contain it.
The anger behind the rioting is very understandable but the longer it continues the greater the pressure to crack down which risks missing the point. It’s not the fault of the property owners that police allegedly unlawfully killed a black man.
There clearly a need to address the polices attitude to ethnic minorities in the US. But that doesn’t mean that the police there should ignore unlawful behaviour just because there’s outrage.

Re: America
You're getting things in the wrong order. There are countless videos and reports of peaceful protests that the police have escalated upon. There's been video of police driving past crowds spraying tear gas out of the window, of them using it to change the direction of a march and herd it towards police vans, of them using it directly in the face of someone standing with their hands in the air. The tear gas isn't happening because there are pre-existing riots ex-nihilo (in most cases). The riots are happening because of tear gas. Or the examples in Cashead's videos of mounted police spurring his horse into someone. Or police cars ramming people. Or my example of the police open firing on people standing in their own doorway.Sandydragon wrote:Given the scale of the rioting most police forces in the world would be using tear gas to contain it.

Also, I think we can take the "alleged" out of "unlawfully killed" above. They knelt on his neck, and kept kneeling on it despite him being restrained, despite him complaining that his breathing was restricted, despite him stopping moving and going completely limp. It's on video as an undisputed fact. I think it's gone past alleged, just as the protests have gone past just this one killing.
