Law trials and reffing issues
Wanted s separate thread so the main NZ one doesn't get taken over by reffing complaints.
So far, the two law trials have not come into play but the increased focus on the breakdown has and I've liked it. Mainly been against the attacking teams but I've not seen any missed offences by the jacklers.

Second half became a bit of a penalty fest but stick at it and hopefully players adapt

This thread seems to be just me but hey ho. Refs sticking to applying the rules and I think it is promising.
21 penalties isn't too bad and seemed to be demanding accuracy from defence as much as attack. Just need to get support behind the ball carrier not beside him.

It's going to be a question of both the refs and the players sticking to it. It's okay when the players are cooperating, but will the refs have the minerals to keep going if the players revert and the commentators are whining about 40 penalty games ruining the flow?Cameo wrote:This thread seems to be just me but hey ho. Yep, already a few articles about it not letting games flow. I think it is visibly making rucks look better and less like a mass pile on. Arguably a bit quick on calling holding on a few times but it's not like there weren't any borderline penalties previously.

Articles like this are beginning to frustrate me - https://www.rugbypass.com/news/the-thre ... -fix-fast/
Making assertions can alter perception. I'm all in favour of the penalty counts coming down over time but there is no recognition in this article that they came down significantly between the two rounds to the point where they weren't that much higher than the average for a pro match. It should also be taken into account that it was the Crusaders' first game under the new strictness.
Rugby loves to talk itself into a crisis but generally people who have actually watched the games have enjoyed them.
Super Rugby Aotearoa doesn't have a problem it needs to fix fast, it has an issue that was envisioned and was intended to improve over time by not making fast "fixes". As far as I can see, any attempt to "fix" it will likely undermine the whole point. Let's give it the rest of the tournament.

Considering that the referees and coaches, including Ian Foster, are meeting with the referees and getting feedback and feedforward from each other, the current teething problems should be a thing of the past in a few weeks.

Was at the game live on Saturday so tough to judge how it was reffed. Yesterday it did seem like the ref was less strict though (especially on coming in at the side). Don't know if that was just him (or the weather) but hope it wasn't a direction.

Re: Law trials and reffing issues
Bit weekend coming up for our small band of law trial enthusiasts. We have Australia's turn. Can't actually remember all the trials just now but the interesting is the 40/20 equivalent coming in. .
I'm really keen to see how it works but will need a fair bit of analysis. I can see teams being criticised for going for it too much because of poor success rates while ignoring the fact that it is forcing wingers back. Equally, I can see it having no noticeable effect.
Not many experienced 10s in Australia either.

Re: Law trials and reffing issues
Didn't watch it all - mainly because the second game was painful to watch - but only a few 50-22s or 22-50s. O'Connor did go for it within about 20 seconds and nearly made it. On that there was was a bit of a game changer, turning scrappy ball in their own half into a lineout deep in the opponent's 22.
Second game it felt like their was space out wide (possibly created by more being back) but skills weren't really up to it.
Bit confused on teh goal-line drop out rule. I thought it was when a ball was kicked through into the dead all area and the team didn't manage to bring it out. However, it seems to also apply where the defending team has carried it back too (i.e. replacing a 5 metre scrum). That seems over helpful to the defending team to me, but I suppose gets rid of another scrum.

I’d completely forgotten this was happening until this popped up.
Seeing it actually used in a game I think I’m more open to the idea.

That does look like a fun tactic. But what is with the sound on that video? Sounds like someone's having sex in the background.Mikey Brown wrote:I’d completely forgotten this was happening until this popped up.

Oh wow. I hadn’t even played it with the sound on. I guess someone really likes this new rule?

Re: Law trials and reffing issues
Haven't watched that much more of the Australian comp but did feel the refs bottled it a wee bit in NZ. Still a better focus on offside and staying on your feet (and straight) at rucks but became less strict. Didn't matter too much as a lot of good rugby.
I do think SH refs have a different view on dangerous play too. Incident in the Chiefs Hurricanes game where ref says "That was late, you flipped him with force and he landed dangerously, yellow card". I'm not saying it had to be red but last year the refs would have felt the need to find some mitigation not to give the red.
