This is going to sound opportunist, but are any formal long term studies of the effects of this going on? Employment, crime, social behavior all a few years down the track would likely be affected by this.

There's on-going longitudinal studies -- like the Dunedin Study, Growing Up in NZ, and Pacific Island Families -- that will catch some things, but don't think anything specific has been whipped up.

Seems they won't need the Greens, which is unfortunate and not really how MMP is supposed to work. But at least we'll now get to see how much of the general handbraking was Winnie and how much was Labour itself. I suspect a disappointingly large amount of the latter, unfortunately.

It is unprecedented, and as you said, it's not meant to happen under MMP. Hopefully it'll be a C&S arrangement to keep it at 70+. It'll also be interesting to see what happens with the Maori Party, who look like they've gotten back in via the Waiariki electorate.
