10% (1-off Covid tithe) for all - that would help...
Meanwhile the 'nothing' s ruining our jollies' brigade are out again - seem to recall ski-trips to virus flare-up spots went unabated at the critical containment stage last winter.

Apparently, Barry Island is packed out as well. I get the feeling that large numbers of people just don't care any more; it will genuinely take people dying in Hospital car parks for anyone to take notice. I can guarantee that any time that this comes up in the media, someone posts the use rates or intensive care units at about 70-80%.Galfon wrote:10% (1-off Covid tithe) for all - that would help...

Re: COVID19
I dont get this.
People here are losing loved ones, hospitals are under intense pressure with staff at breaking point, businesses are dying on their feet, people are having to get benefits to get by and many are having to endure the most awful restrictions.
Yet its okay for people to fly off for a Christmas holiday.
You cant travel out of tier 4, but want a midwinter getaway on foreign soil, go right ahead.
Have the Govt lost their fucking minds.
Non essential travel should be stopped. If we have to hunker down to try and get through this, then people can forego a holiday on the slopes, or anywhere else for that mater.

AstraZeneca vaccine approved for use, first doses to be delivered on Monday

On a personal note, still no news on whether I count as a "frontline health care professional" or not.

It is strange. My wife is an anaesthetist and has no idea when or if she will get a vaccine.Which Tyler wrote:AstraZeneca vaccine approved for use, first doses to be delivered on Monday

However, of our local friends:
Admin staff at the local dental hospital? Already vaccinated.
NHS Psychiatrist? Already vaccinated.
Hospital pharmacologist? Already vaccinated.
Paediatric anaesthetist? No idea when.
There's also the small hiccup that, due to test centres being overwhelmed, she's being told to take kids to theatre without their test results coming back in time.
It's all fine. This is fine.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Re: COVID19
Good old western efficiency at work. We in USandA are about 18 million short of the projected 20 million vaccinations for the end of the year (cut down from a promised 100 million). We are ready for them on the ground, but there is a black hole between obtaining them from producers and distribution from government centers. What a fucking surprise. Donnell hasn't been able to offer any enlightenment from the golf course and Jared is preoccupied with selling smart bombs to the Saudis.
Israel are vaccinating 2% of their population per day, and are flying ahead.*
*Palestinians in occupied territories not included in the vaccination drive.

Re: COVID19
Did a 4 hour shift drawing doses of the Moderns vaccine to hand off to nurses for jabbing punters. It’s a delicate wee flower and is sensitive to being shook up and degraded, but is otherwise very simple to handle. The program is slowly building pace but is very slow at the moment and relies almost entirely on volunteer labour. Could do better IMO. Quite a nice quiet solidarity amongst those volunteers though. Thank fuck for the sincere commitment of motivated medical students. Those kids are rock stars and have risen to the challenge. Pretty humbling to be given a good old telling off for bad material practice handling by a millennial. Quite a place in time right now. Front line health workers...I will raise one to you all tonight.

My 40 year old Brother-in-law has spent New Years in hospital with his parents. No underlying conditions, just bad luck in catching it on top of a chest infection he'd already caught.
Shows how simple it can be to seriously fuck you up. Just catch a common seasonal infection and suddenly Covid is a lot more effective at pinning you to a hospital bed.

Yeah, I'm still baffled by this argument from the non-believers and anti-vaxxers that it's only seriously ill people who really suffer from it. As if that's fine anyway. There's a huge proportion of people just teetering on the edge of being caught out by having something as mild as a cold or asthma, but that's fine. Personal responsibility and all that. All the best to your BIL.Stom wrote:My 40 year old Brother-in-law has spent New Years in hospital with his parents. Re: COVID19
Situation is extremely serious.
The number of new infections and hospital admissions just over the last 2 weeks are deeply concerning.
Many Docs commenting on overstretched hospitals with staff working flat out just to stand still.
The next month promises to be utterly grim.

If the recent case numbers in UK from the new variant lead to deaths at a conservative 2% rate, we should creep up the table then hopefully the vaccination programme, restrictions and
reduced seasonal silliness will slow things down.

Just to give an quick unwanted update, due to lack of testing accuracy patients that initially test negative, get taken to surgery and then test positive (along with their family members) mean that my wife is now one of 2 paediatric anaesthetists covering cardiac surgery across the whole of Scotland, the rest being off either with covid or isolating after exposure.

I don’t believe the Russian figures, although that is a huge country so isolating is probably less of an issue for rural communities.
Belgium still top of the larger nations (ie non city states).
